History University of Memphis

In the year 1909, Tennessee saw a major change as the General Education Bill was passed. The bill's objective was to lay down foundations for three brand new colleges. One each in the three grand divisions of Tennessee, and one exclusively for African-American students. Two locations were shortlisted for this purpose, Jackson and Memphis. In a turn of events, the lawmakers decided on Memphis as the new home for the college in West Tennessee, mainly because of its excellent accessibility via rail lines. Great news for students and teachers wanting to visit their families! These initial seeds sprouted into four significant institutions over time, the East Tennessee State University (ETSU), Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), Tennessee State University (TSU), and of course, the University of Memphis.

Before the West Tennessee Normal School was created as part of the General Education Bill, Memphis had already been a hub of knowledge and higher learning. Several education departments were operating under the name "University of Memphis," which came to existence in 1909. This was achieved by extending an existing medical school and adding dentistry, pharmacy, and law departments. The West Tennessee Normal School began its journey on September 10, 1912, under the leadership of Seymour A. Mynders, a man trusted to fill the president's shoes. By 1913, West Tennessee Normal School had absorbed the "University of Memphis" departments, leaving only the law school untouched.

Tragedy shook the campus with the passing of Mynders in 1913. His successor, John Willard Brister, kept the torch lit, though he'd step down in 1918. Andrew A. Kincannon, the next president, served till 1924, only to make way for Brister once again. The institute ushered in a new era, changing its name to West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925. Did you know? It wasn't just about education. The campus introduced its very first newspaper, The Tiger Rag, in 1931, promising to give a voice to its students.

The ever-evolving college became the Memphis State College in 1941, adding more feathers to its cap with an expanded liberal arts curriculum. From 1943 onwards, the president's baton passed hands several times. Jennings B. Sanders (1943), J. Millard (Jack) Smith (1946), and Cecil C. Humphreys (1960) each led the college towards significant milestones. By 1951, Memphis State College was awarding B.A. degrees. In 1957, it became Memphis State University, marking full university status.

Race held a major role in 1959, five years post the verdict of Brown v. Board of Education by the Supreme Court of the United States, which declared racial segregation in public education unconstitutional. Amidst heavy media attention, Memphis State University opened its doors to its first black students - "The Memphis State Eight". They were initially faced with social restrictions on campus, which were eventually lifted, leading the way to today's diverse student body where black students constitute over one-third of the population.

After Humphreys resigned in 1966, the university began awarding doctoral degrees under the leadership of the interim president, John Richardson. Leadership kept changing hands, with Dr. Billy Mac Jones stepping in as president in 1973, followed by Thomas Carpenter in 1980, and V. Lane Rawlins in 1991. Witnessing a significant name change in 1994, the Memphis State University became known as the University of Memphis.

The string of dynamic leadership continued with Dr. Ralph Faudree helming the university for a year after V. Lane Rawlins' departure. 2001 saw the university welcoming its first female president, Shirley Raines, who led the campus till 2013. In these years, in 2008, the Tigers men's basketball team reached the NCAA Finals. Raines' successor, Dr. M. David Rudd, was appointed in May 2014 after a yearlong search.

In the spring of 2020, plight struck as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The University of Memphis, along with thousands of institutions worldwide, made a dramatic switch to online classes mid-semester. They also implemented a credit/no credit grading system in lieu of the traditional grading scale for that semester. Through it all, the University of Memphis has proven to demonstrate an unwavering dedication to education, adapting to the times and persisting through adversities.
