Celebrated as the oldest established university within the boundaries of the United States, the University of Pennsylvania (known affectionately as Penn), holds unparalleled prestige not only domestically, but on an international scale as well. Founded in 1740, originally as the Charity School in Philadelphia, Penn is honoured to be a part of the coveted Ivy League fraternity, a group representing the eight most elite universities in America. The roots of Penn trace back to Benjamin Franklin, its very first president, who masterminded the institution to be a beacon of superior educational opportunities, bolstered by an emphasis on research and innovation. Embracing a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary approach since its inception, Penn's reputation for intertwining science and education remains unshaken.
Penn proudly boasts the initiation of the first speciality medical school in America in 1765 and expanded its horizons by starting a law school in 1850. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences opened its doors in 1852, whilst the globally-acclaimed Wharton School of Business was inaugurated in 1881. Penn's academic fabric is enriched by exceptional popularity and proficiency in medicinal studies, physics, and economics. An allegiance to educational and research excellence reflected in the recognition by way of Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, amassing to nine in just the last two decades.
From the perspective of a student, Penn offers far more than just a traditional educational experience. The interdisciplinary approach presents the opportunity to delve into multi-disciplinary studies, offering a more holistic perspective. This unique approach breaks boundaries, fostering a culture of innovation, exploration, and expansive thinking. Penn's broad global connect of 60 partner universities aids in fostering diversity and global perspective, further enhancing learning opportunities and experience. The university is also home to various schools and profile colleges, institutes, and faculties, providing a wide array of study options for students.
Furthermore, Penn's culture of recognising merit transcends borders, genders, and religious beliefs. It provides an enriching learning environment that extends beyond classrooms, empowering students to become researchers, scholars, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow. Additionally, the prestige associated with being an Ivy League institution and the global recognition of academic excellence that Penn enjoys, offers its students an advantage in the competitive professional world. After all, who wouldn’t want to be a part of a university that has been a stepping-stone for Nobel laureates and Pulitzer prize winners?

Let’s embark on a fascinating time travel journey back to the year 1855, when Millersville University, one of Pennsylvania's esteemed educational institutions, was born. A notable event transpired in that year; the establishment of a school earmarked for teacher training, known as Lancaster County Normal School. Unique in its purpose, it was the pioneer state normal school in Pennsylvania.
In just a short span of four years, the school underwent its first transformation, adopting the name ‘Millersville State Normal School’. The evolution didn't stop there; in 1927, it stepped up as a state teachers' college. The growth was unstoppable and by 1959, it was renamed ‘Millersville State College’. Amidst its exceptional progress, the year 1983 saw it ascend to ‘Millersville University of Pennsylvania’.
How did this notable growth happen? The answer takes us back to November 1852, when passionate educators from the Lancaster County Educational Association, sparked the idea of a teacher training institute. Their first endeavour, backed by immense support from Thomas H. Burrowes, took flight in January 1853. The vision didn't end there; Lewis M. Hobbs, a respected Manor district teacher, fervently rallied for a permanent teachers training abode in Manor.
Thanks to the generous donation of a five-acre site from Jacob Shenk, a local farmer, and Hobbs' fundraising efforts, this dream was close to becoming a reality. April 17, 1855, marked a significant milestone in their journey – with the Lancaster County Normal School opening its doors under the esteemed leadership of Principal James P. Wickersham. The institute saw a peak of 147 teachers and the first full session commenced on November 5, 1855, under the capable stewardship of President Thomas H. Burrowes and Vice President Lewis M. Hobbs.
As the institute grew, it stimulated an expansion project that took the Academy building from its original size to accommodate nearly 200 eager students and their tutors in 96 rooms. An impressive landmark on the campus is the Biemesderfer Executive Center, standing tall as a symbol of its rich legacy since 1894. Interestingly enough, the center, once known as the Old Library, was brought to life on a budget of $27,500, awarded to D.H. Rapp, following a blind auction in 1891.
The growth story of this esteemed institution wouldn't be complete without the mention of the Millersville University Library, housed in Ganser Hall. In a bid to provide an enriched learning environment, the university closed Ganser Hall for two years in 2011 for a revamp. August 26, 2013, saw the reincarnation of Ganser Library as the McNairy Library and Learning Forum at Ganser Hall, offering a new platform for knowledge seekers.
The university's history has seen its share of sobering events too. One such incident, in August 2021, involved a 19-year-old freshman, Matthew Mindler. Known to many as a child actor from the film "My Idiot Brother," Matthew's untimely death sent shockwaves across the campus. He had been reported missing before his body was found in Manor Township, close to the Millersville campus. It was a tragic reminder of the vulnerabilities that ripple under the surface of our lives, even amidst our pursuit of knowledge and growth.
This captivating tale of growth, resilience, and evolution represents the legacy of Millersville University, an institution dedicated to fostering knowledge and growth in every individual who walks through its welcoming gates.
