History Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Back in the year 1886, a group of trustees from the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts launched something special. They began the journey of what we now recognize as MCAD, short for Minneapolis College of Art and Design. It was initially christened the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. It was Douglas Volk, a seasoned American portrait artist with education roots from the Parisian master Jean-Léon Gérôme, who held the reign as its first president. On the first roll-call, just 28 students were present, predominantly women.

In a turn of events in December 1889, the school shifted gears to a leased space on the top of the Minneapolis Public Library, situating itself at the junction of 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue. In 1893, there was another shift in leadership when Robert Koehler, a celebrated German-born painter and educator, traversed all the way from New York to take up the presidency. Over the following decade, he crafted a large portion of the curriculum which eventually gave birth to the field of art education.

As the 20th century dawned, the school expanded its horizons with two instructors, architecting night classes for the community and inaugurating a summer term. There was a significant change in 1910 when the School of Fine Arts decided to rebrand itself as the Minneapolis School of Art, thereby acknowledging its increased emphasis on applied arts.

In 1915, another big move beckoned as the school relocated to a stone’s throw away from downtown Minneapolis, taking up new abode within the freshly minted Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The hefty 10-acre land that played host to the art museum and school was an extraordinary gift from a local banking magnate, Clinton Morrison. The site was once home to Morrison’s parents and the first mayor of Minneapolis, Dorilus Morrison, and his wife, Harriet Putnam Whitmore Morrison.

In the very next year, the school further upgraded its facilities and moved into the Julia Morrison Memorial Building, a tribute from Clinton Morrison’s children to their mother. Known for its spacious studios with skylights, the building was also home to administrative offices and workshops. The architect behind this trendsetting establishment was none other than accomplished architect Edwin Hawley Hewitt.

A milestone was marked in 1970 when the institution was once again re-christened as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, embracing a broader curriculum including fine arts and liberal arts. The college saw a spike in student numbers, reaching nearly 600 by this time causing a severe space crunch. The solution came in 1974 with an expansive building designed by modernist architect Kenzo Tange.

By July 1, 1988, MCAD declared itself a fully independent institution, breaking away from the governing body of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts. A significant update surfaced on October 19, 2016, when both the full-time and adjunct faculty members unionized under the banner of the Service Employees International Union Local 284.

The saga of MCAD is genuinely inspiring; it is the story of resilience, transformation, and the ongoing pursuit of excellence in the field of art and design. Today, every aspiring artist from all corners of the globe, including India, sees MCAD as a beacon of top-notch artwork education.
