Once upon a time, in the rustic hillside near Mobile, Alabama, a visionary bishop named Michael Portier, hailing from France, brought an institution to life. His dream was Spring Hill College, a name that echoes in the annals of Alabama's educational history even today. It was the year 1830, a sunny May Day when Bishop Portier, having secured staff from his native France, commenced the first semester with a promising batch of 30 under the college's formal roof.
An interesting back story marks the creation of this institute. Bishop Portier undertook a challenging voyage back to France to raise funds and recruit competent faculty. The circle of his supporters back home widened with names like Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Archbishop of Lyons who played the role of a benefactor to the fledgling institution, even donating his rich philosophical and theological library. Another noteworthy contribution came from Pauline Jaricot, the Society of the Propagation of the Faith's founder, who extended a whopping 38,000 francs for the college.
Just within a year of its inception, the cornerstone of the first permanent building, the now Administration building, was laid. Spring Hill's journey of becoming Alabama's oldest higher education institution, began. Its prestigious affiliation to the Jesuits commenced under Father Francis Gautrelet, S.J., as president in the September of 1847, thus firmly placing it as the third-oldest Jesuit college in the United States.
A significant turn in the college's history came in 1836, when the governor of Alabama, Clement C. Clay, delivering on a legislative act, granted it full powers to give out degrees, a privilege it eagerly used the very next year, 1837, to award degrees to its inaugural four graduates.
The college, unfortunately, didn't have a smooth run initially. The first two presidents were summoned to bishop duties elsewhere, and even as Bishop Portier changed the management from French Fathers of Mercy to the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, he found the administrative experience lacking.
During the troubling times of the American Civil War, Spring Hill college became a refuge for young boys nearing the draft age. However, the college still played an active part in the war efforts, forming two military companies and having many of its Jesuit fathers serve as chaplains for the Confederacy. Despite an attempt to conscript all Jesuit brothers, the college's president managed to negotiate a temporary reprieve.
Post the war, during the Reconstruction era, the college attracted students from Central American and Cuban leaders. But the 1869 fire disaster led to a temporary relocation to St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Yet, equipped with the support of benefactors, the college stood proudly again at the Spring Hill location before the year's end.
The Throwback to the dark days of racial segregation when Spring Hill College, like most Southern colleges, didn’t admit black students, should remind us of the steps taken towards an inclusive society. It was as late as 1954 that the college welcomed its first black students, yet a notable early step towards civil rights for Alabama's African Americans, even commended by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr himself in one of his 1963 letters.
Today, the Spring Hill College stands tall as an institution that weathered storms, gathered strength from its journeys, and carved a space in the heart of Alabama's higher education.
