Imagine a group of visionary education enthusiasts who, on April 18, 1853, decided to establish a promising institution - Monmouth Academy, which soon changed its title to Monmouth College, thanks to the charter granted by the state legislature on September 3, 1856. Associated with the Presbyterian Church and being a proud member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, this unique institution carved its path with the illuminating motto- "Lux," signifying light.
At the helm, as the first president, was David Wallace, a man experienced in building mission churches in Massachusetts. And no sooner had the college found its footing, than the storm of the American Civil War hit. With the student body primarily consisting of men leaving for military service, Monmouth found its mission embattled. Out of 232 members associated with the college that served in the Civil War, a quarter came back wounded, and one in eight didn't return at all. Amid such ordeals, two standouts emerged bearing the Medal of Honor, one of them being Abner C. Harding, a trustee who soared to the rank of a brigadier General for his gallantry at Fort Donelson in 1863.
Shining among such brave examples, the college thrived under Wallace, who firmly believed "the college must educate, whether there be peace or war". Operating under such a vision, the institution was open to both men and women, bestowing equal opportunities on everyone. This ethos of equality spurred some enterprising women in 1867 to establish the first fraternity for women, named today as Pi Beta Phi, carving another milestone for Monmouth. Kappa Kappa Gamma, another reputed women’s fraternity, took root there just three years later.
Fast forward to 1911, Monmouth College was making waves on the national front. In a US government classification, it outshone 244 other colleges, standing tall among only 59 that were ranked higher. However, deja-vu struck in the form of World War II with a similar crisis hovering over the college. As male students began signing up for the military service post the attack on Pearl Harbor, the College adapted to the dire circumstances collaborating with the U.S. Navy Department. The college astutely turned its course into a Naval Flight Preparatory School and later provided a V-5 Navy Academic Refresher Unit program for officers.
Monmouth's chemistry department began to gain national recognition in the 1950s, especially when our respected professor, William S. Haldeman received a noteworthy award from the American Chemical Society. Guess what? Monmouth along with other small colleges like Hope, Juniata, St. Olaf, and Oberlin generated more Ph.D. candidates in chemistry than renown universities like Johns Hopkins, Fordham, Columbia, Tulane, and Syracuse combined!
The 1960s was a period of transformation, triggering a wave of secularization within the College. At the same time support was slipping from the United Presbyterian Church, the College shifted strategy by expanding the pool of trustees. The college deliberately sought after trustees with more commercial know-how and stronger financial resources, while still upholding its covenant with the Presbyterian Church.
Like in the past, during the Vietnam War, college attendance shot up due to the military draft and its avoidance measures. But, this spike took a hit when the draft ended in the 1970s, resulting in a sudden drop in the number of students, reminding the College of past historical challenges like the Civil War.
A generous alumnus came to the rescue in 1983, donating 5 million dollars to the endowment and initiated a 15 million dollar capital campaign, marking the most significant gift in college history till that point. A growth spurt hit Monmouth during the 1990s, with enrollment numbers doubling in the two decades that followed, peaking at 1,379 in 2009. Although the numbers fell to 753 by 2021, the College's endowment saw a significant leap, growing from $23.6 million in 1993 to over $115 million in 2020.
With $75 million higher than the average for similar colleges, Monmouth's endowment in 2021 stood at a staggering $146 million. In this period, the campus saw a revamp worth more than $120 million. So, Monmouth, resolute in its mission, 'lux', or light, continues to flourish through the trials of history, ever ready to illuminate young minds.
