Western Oregon University (WOU), positioned in Monmouth, is a pillar in the historical and educational dynamics of the Oregon University System. As the oldest of the state universities and regarded for its rich history dating back to 1856, WOU has made an impressive journey of growth and scientific strides. Initially known as Monmouth College, it later merged with Bethel College in 1865 and established itself as a teaching school becoming Oregon Normal Teaching School. Following a local initiative - approved by Oregon Legislative Assembly - the university took the name Oregon Normal School in 1910. The early 20th century marked a period of exponential growth for the university, with students' enrollment blossoming from 316 in 1920 to surpassing 1000 by 1939. At this period, it became Oregon College of Education, having developed focus on humanitarian and natural science disciplines. In 1981, it took on its current name, Western Oregon University, symbolic of its elegance in the humanities. However, it was in 1997 that it officially became a university. By 2015, it became academically independent and came under the guidance of its Board of Directors. Today, a proud university with two nation-wide noted affiliates; a teaching research center and the National Center for Blind and Deaf, WOU boasts of an impressive workforce of 460 teachers and 425 administrative staff.

Take a trip with me back in time, to the year 1856, when the story of the prestigious Western Oregon University initially took root. Back then, it wasn't known by its present name. No, it was called Monmouth University, notably established in the heart of the vibrant Monmouth city. Fast forward to 1865, just nine years later, it found a kindred spirit in another private institution, Bethel College located in the quaint Bethel town - both merging to become the Christian College.
Progress didn't slow, and by 1882 our beloved educational institution had successfully pitched to the Oregon State Legislature a proposal too good to refuse. The proposition was simple; to evolve into a state-supported teacher training school, which, as we now know, got the nod. Welcoming a new era, the Oregon State Normal School emerged, forever changing the trajectory of countless lives.
A historic November 1910 saw Monmouth's citizens embracing educational progress. An initiative petition, Measure 10, to officially create a normal school in Monmouth was passed by a delightful majority of 55.6%. The result? Yet another name change to Oregon Normal School. While additional measures to create normal schools in Ashland and Weston were on the ballot, they didn’t share the same fortune; falling short of approval.
Let's fast-forward to the 1920s, a particularly exciting period. Why? Well, the school’s enrollment exploded, skyrocketing from a humble 316 in 1920 to a jaw-dropping 990 by 1927! Though, as the hard times of the Great Depression rolled in, student numbers dwindled slightly, hitting the lowest point in the 1933–34 academic year. Nevertheless, the resilient spirit of education prevailed, student numbers rebounding, breaking the 1,000 barrier for the first time during the 1938–39 academic year.
1939 marked another milestone with a pivotal name change to the Oregon College of Education by the Oregon Legislature, ushering an extended period of growth, only interrupted momentarily during World War II. Amidst the societal changes, the college navigated its expansion course, introducing new programs in liberal arts and sciences.
Fast forward to 1981, the institution donned a new identity - Western Oregon State College - to appropriately reflect the growing array of programs in arts and sciences. Keeping pace with the evolving educational landscape, the name underwent a final change in 1997. This time, it becomes what we know and love today: Western Oregon University, true representative reflecting its expanded academic mission and broader profile.
Through this journey, not just names changed. It was about the evolution of an idea, the commitment to remain responsive to the ever-changing needs of the community, all while keeping a steadfast focus on academic excellence, earning its place as the beacon of education and enlightenment it is - the Western Oregon University we know and love today.
