History Montreat College

The intriguing story of Montreat College emerged from an initiative in 1897 by John C. Collins, a Congregationalist minister hailing from New Haven, Connecticut. Alongside Collins, other dedicated associates from diverse denominations, including evangelist Weston R. Gales, birthed the Mountain Retreat Association. Reflecting its unique background, the association was not bound by a single denomination but was born from a diverse interdenominational fabric without any specific church control or affiliation. A captivating way to remember Montreat is through its name. Deriving from the terms 'Mountain Retreat', its meaning has remained apt as the original concept has changed, grown and developed into what it is renowned for today.

At its inception, the organisation saw itself serving a noble purpose: To establish and sustain a municipality in the North Carolina mountains that can provide a supportive ecosystem to foster Christian work and living. Through offering public worship, missionary work, schools, libraries, homes for orphans, manual and trades training, it aimed to become a hub for Christian work and fellowship. Furthermore, aspiring to be more than just a spiritual centre, it wished to cultivate a health resort atmosphere for permanent and temporary dwelling, promoting an environment conducive to health, rest, and recreation.

Fast forward to now, the name Montreat is synonymous with at least three different entities, one of them being Montreat College. Progressing swiftly in its course of development, the original Mountain Retreat Association transitioned into a Presbyterian conference centre within a decade of being founded. Credit goes to J. R. Howerton from North Carolina who bought Montreat to steer it towards serving the United States Presbyterian Church, often informally termed the Southern Presbyterian Church.

Not far off, in 1913, Robert C. Anderson, the then president of the Mountain Retreat Association, mooted that the Association's grounds be transformed into an educational institution during the academic year. After careful thought, assessment, and fruitful discussions, the Ad Interim Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. complied in 1915. Eventually, Montreat Normal School swung its doors open for the first time in October 1916, headed by Anderson, the first president.

The new school became a beacon, offering a promising future to girls of junior college and high school age. According to the Asheville Citizen, the institution sought to provide more than just teaching careers, it aimed to impart Christian education to deserving girls whose dedication and purpose assured the best utilization of education. In January 1917, the State of North Carolina granted a charter to the Mountain Retreat Association's 'Managing Committee'. This paved the way for offering their buildings, grounds, and amenities to the school for eight months annually while the school diligently shouldered utility expenses and routine repairs.

From the outset, the accounts of the Mountain Retreat Association and Montreat College were kept distinct, indicating the college's independent operation. This newborn institution of education, the predecessor of what we know as Montreat College today, was set afoot by leveraging the Mountain Retreat Association's facilities that were previously used exclusively for summer conferences.

In 1934, Montreat College redoubled its commitment to promoting education by transforming into a junior college. Later on, it expanded its curriculum to a four-year program, although by the late 1950s, it reverted to being a junior college. An important milestone was achieved in 1967, when the Town of Montreat was founded due to the relinquishment of the infrastructure maintenance of the retreat centre by the Mountain Retreat Association.

The years washed up significant changes. In the 1980s, Montreat re-expanded its course offering to include a four-year curriculum again, tacking on graduate programs later. However, the devastating Great Recession of 2008 posed severe financial hurdles. Looking for solutions, a merger with Point University was entertained but dropped in 2013. In 2014, their luck turned with a $6 million anonymous donation. The trustees, inspired by this stir of luck, decided to raise additional funds and hire a new president. And so in the following summer, Paul J. Maurer took office. Today, Montreat College stands as a testament to a history rich in purpose, growth, overcoming adversities and continuous evolution to serve students better.
