Once upon a time, way back in 1851, seven good years before Minnesota officially celebrated statehood, the seed of one of the world's top public research institutions was sown. The University of Minnesota had just two professors and a student body of just desperately 23. Little did they know the grand destiny they laid the cornerstone for!
The chap pushing the wheelbarrow of progress was a gentleman by the name of William Watts Folwell, the university's first president. He was surely trendsetter in those 1869 fashion stakes with his bushy beard. But no jesting aside, this man was instrumental in building this institution in the face of the bank panic of 1857, a disruptive civil war, and an internal strife in 1858.
Those were tough days, let me tell you. But, steadfast as the North Star, the university continued its growth. By 1870s, the student distribution was something of a curiosity. There were more women in the university than men, quite a revolutionary step for that era, wasn't it?
Next, it was Cyrus Northrop's turn to step up as the president in 1884. His game plan was expansion - bigger was better, more is merrier!
