The grand story of Saint Elizabeth University finds its roots in 1899. It was a time when the world was changing rapidly, and education was gaining unparalleled prominence. The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, women with an indomitable spirit and an unshakeable belief in the power of knowledge, conceived an idea. An idea to start a beacon of learning, one of the first Catholic colleges in the US that would offer women the gift of education. These women, whose fervor and dedication shaped the university, had a home in a beautiful complex which also housed the motherhouse and convent and an all-girls preparatory school.
Fast forward a time, and we reach 2016, another year of change for the institution. A new era was dawning, and it was the beginning of Saint Elizabeth’s metamorphosis into a co-educational university. Freshmen arriving in the autumn of that year found themselves to be pioneers, as they were the first males to set foot as students in an institution that had been a sanctuary of female education for over a century. The last echoes of an all-female student body could be heard until 2019 when the final all-female class graduated.
Then, as we moved further into the future, July 1, 2020, marked a historic day for the college. A day that signified recognition and evolution. The New Jersey Department of Education, recognizing the college's commitment to providing comprehensive education, deemed it suitable to be accorded university status. A testament to years of dedication and perseverance, the college was now officially Saint Elizabeth University.
Now, you might be wondering why the name 'Elizabeth'? A step back in time might give us some clarity. We travel to the 18th century and meet Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821). Her life’s work was the establishment of the Sisters of Charity and posthumously, she gained recognition as the United States' first native-born saint. The university is a tribute to her, carrying her name and legacy forward. Her name lives on not just here, but also in other esteemed institutions like Seton Hall University in New Jersey and Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania.
This journey, spanning over a century, is the captivating saga of Saint Elizabeth University. A testament to bravery, adaptation, and continuous evolution, it is a tale that continues to inspire generations of students year after year.
