In the year 1899, nestled in the heart of the American Midwest, the journey of what's today known as Ball State University, began. Picture a modest plot of land transforming into the Eastern Indiana Normal School, a private institution replete with classrooms, a library, and even a space for the president to reside. Can you imagine, all of this was under one roof, in none other than the edifice still standing tall today - the Frank A. Bracken Administration Building! Playing host to a bustling student body of 256, study was a mere $10 a year. However, the sunshine was short-lived as by 1901, the school had to shut its doors, marred by funding challenges.
But like the Phoenix, the institution rose again, thanks to the generous $100,000 endowment by Francis Palmer, a retired Indiana banker. Shaking off its past identity, the school was reborn as Palmer University in 1902 and held onto it for the next three years. Between 1905 and 1907, it swapped 'Palmer' for 'Indiana' and became the Indiana Normal College, housing two divisions - the Normal School, dedicated to educating future educators, and the College of Applied Sciences.
However, tough times seemed to shadow the university. The decreasing number of students and continued lack of funding led to its closure by end of 1906-1907. Even so, it was soon revived by a band of local investors, led by Michael Kelly. They renamed it as the Indiana Normal Institute, operated it on a mortgage from the Muncie Trust Company, and injected life back into the deserted Bracken Administration Building. The renewed spirit saw its biggest roster of students, a praiseworthy 806. Yet, the attempts to keep the hopeful institution afloat fell short and the school had to again suspend its operation in 1917.
Things took a dramatic turn on July 25, 1917. The Ball brothers, trailblazing local innovators and founders of the Ball Corporation, reached out and rescued the institute from foreclosure. Their philanthropic urges didn't just stop there. They went on to establish the Ball Memorial Hospital and Minnetrista and even generously funded their uncle George Harvey Ball's dream project, the Keuka College. With a hefty sum of $35,100, they engulfed the flailing school with new hopes and dreams.
By the time 1918 saw its dawn, the school and its surrounding land were accepted as a gracious gift by the state legislators. The budding school then joined forces with the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute and the Marion Normal Institute, cocooning under the comprehensive moniker - the Indiana State Normal School – Eastern Division. With William W. Parsons at the helm and an earnest student body of 235, the institution embarked on a fresh chapter.
The Bonds between the Balls and the school gradually knit a unifying nickname for the college - "Ball State" with its long variant being used less and less. Come 1922, the Indiana state legislature put a formal stamp on the nickname, renaming the school as Ball Teachers College, as a nod to the Ball family's enduring goodwill. Very soon, Ball Teachers College made yet another leap with the addition of Benjamin J. Burris, who succeeded President Linnaeus N. Hines in 1924. Over the years, the Balls kept their goodwill flowing. Having enriched the Science Hall and Ball Gymnasium, they witnessed the student population swell to almost 1000 by the academic year 1925-1926.
Interestingly, the strong bond between the school and the Ball Corporation sparked a fun nickname for the college - "Fruit Jar Tech". The name stayed until 1929 when the school became the Ball State Teachers College. Student intake peaked significantly in the next year. The 1935 addition of the Fine Arts Building injected a fresh wave of growth. Around the same time, the Ball family's magnanimity was etched in stone, quite literally. A magnificent bronze statue, an embodiment of their unyielding generosity, was commissioned, crowning the 20th anniversary of their monumental gift.
From the decade of the '30s to the '60s, Ball State navigated the tumultuous waters of World War II. Despite experiencing transient declines in male student registration due to war services, the university rebounded with significant drives for student accommodation and academic advancements. It also responded to the national cause with Civilian Pilot Training programs, Army Specialized Training Program and Navy V-1 Program.
As the decades swept past, Ball State carved out its individual space and became an independent entity. It even heralded a gold rush of construction, welcoming numerous building projects spanning academics, arts, wellness and more. Looking back, the magnificent journey of Ball State University is indeed a saga of resilience, transformation, and endless pursuit of education. Today, it stands not
