Step back in time to the year 1890, when the seeds of Belmont University were sown. Imagine Susan Ledley Heron and Ida Emily Hood, two remarkable women, creating Belmont Women's College on the very grounds of the Belmont Mansion. This grand edifice, crafted by Joseph Acklen and Adelicia (Hayes) Acklen, is a treasure even today. Preserved by the non-profit Belmont Mansion Association, it serves as a historical hot spot offering glimpses into Victorian art and furnishings.
Moving forward to 1913, the paths of Belmont Women's College and Ward Seminary crossed resulting in their merger, setting the stage for the birth of Ward—Belmont College. A unique institution that encompassed both a junior college and college-prep school for women. The university today, stands amidst gorgeous gardens, gazebos, and outdoor statuary surviving from the Acklen era.
Fast forward to 1991, Belmont University, then known as Ward-Belmont College, morphs into its present-day identity. This change brought about amazing accolades such as the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation conferred on December 1, 2020, celebrating the university's role in boosting mutual understanding between Japan and the US.
Now, let's rewind a bit to May 1922. Picture a 16-year-old Boy Scout named John "Jack" DeWitt Jr installing a twenty-watt transmitter at Belmont, marking the birth of Nashville's first radio station, WDAA. An idea championed by Doctor C. E. Crosland, Associate President, who saw the potential advertising value of a radio station for the college. The watershed moment came on April 18, 1922, when the very first music program was broadcast in Nashville, a testament to Dewitt's later success as the President of WSM (AM) radio station.
Bouncing to 1951, the Tennessee Baptist Convention swooped in to resuscitate Ward–Belmont College, then under severe financial stress. The convention reshaped it into a co-educational institution named Belmont College, choosing R. Kelly White at its helm. The college flourished exponentially under a succession of dynamic leaders like Herbert Gabhart and Bill Troutt, witnessing a massive surge in enrolment and launching of new programmes like music business.
In 2005, a rift developed between Belmont's board of trustees and the Tennessee Baptist Convention with the former seeking to remove the university from the control of the latter while maintaining a "fraternal relationship". The resulting friction led to a legal battle and the severing of ties with the convention in 2007. The university agreed to an amicable disaffiliation, intending to maintain its Christian identity without any specific denominational attachment.
Belmont University found itself at the center of controversy and change when women's soccer coach Lisa Howe alleged unfair dismissal due to her same-sex relationship. The incident sparked anti-discrimination protests and led to the inclusion of sexual orientation in the university's non-discrimination policies in January 2011. A momentous decision was made on February 27, 2011, when the university officially recognized a gay student organization for the first time. It marked a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance.
In 2018, Belmont University welcomed the O'More College of Design into its family. Mere months later, it announced a split of its current College of Visual and Performing Arts into two distinct colleges. This strategic move emphasized areas of focus, paving the way for the further expansion when Watkins College of Art, Design & Film merged with Belmont University in 2020. This bold move, however, respected the Christian ethos of the university while showing flexibility to accommodate the divergence in the positions of faith of former Watkins employees.
The year 2020 also brought forward some interesting revelations about the university's long-standing relationship with CoreCivic, formerly the Corrections Corporation of America. Students and alumni raised their voices against potential financial ties with CoreCivic and demanded divestment. The ties traced back to the 1980s when distinct personalities like Jack C. Massey and Thomas Beasley played major roles in the institutions. The involvement of CoreCivic’s CEO, Damon Hininger, as a board member drew further attention, leading to his eventual departure from the board in April 2021.
Belmont University's history is abundant with transformative periods, influential individuals, and meaningful impacts. Each chapter adding depth, shaping its identity, and painting a vibrant picture of this prestigious institution as it continues to educate and shape future generations.
