Picture the year 1866, the Civil War has just ended and the process of rebuilding, known as Reconstruction, engulfs America. Amidst this transformative period, three visionaries - John Ogden, Erastus Milo Cravath, and Edward Parmelee Smith – sowed the seeds of a lasting legacy: The Fisk Free Colored School.
Named after the Union General Clinton B. Fisk, this institution emerged as a beacon of hope for freedom fighters and released slaves, offering them an opportunity to taste education. Planting its roots in Nashville, the institution, initially housed in a former military barracks, was supported by an endowment of $30,000 of government funds. It scaled impressive heights attracting 900 students in just a few months, underscoring the pent-up passion for education among the newly freed.
This success carried with it a recognition of the necessity to expand Fisk’s mission. So, in 1867, Fisk Free Colored School transitioned into Fisk University, with a bold commitment to higher education for all. Another defining chapter began in 1870 with the arrival of Adam K. Spence as the school's principal. He introduced extensive plans for expanding the school, relocating it to a bigger campus at a former Union army base, all while nurturing Fisk's budding choir. This choir, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, touched hearts and spurred fundraising efforts when the institution faced financial crises, bringing in a whopping $50,000 (~$1.09 million in 2022) that built the famous Jubilee Hall.
