Birthed in 1901 by a dynamic Cumberland Presbyterian minister, J. O. McClurkan, a small initiative named "Pentecostal Literary and Bible Training School" took its maiden steps. Its vision? To be part of the influential Pentecostal Alliance and disseminate knowledge to young minds. The seed was sown and tenacity of purpose was its nourishment, which led to the introduction of bachelor's degrees in 1910. It was like a proud feather added to the hat, which resulted in giving the school a new identity, "Trevecca College for Christian Workers", after its name inspiration Trevecca College in enchanting Wales.
In 1914, another significant shift took place. The school from its downtown Nashville hub moved to the greener havens of East Nashville, nestling itself comfortably on Gallatin Road. This seemingly peaceful phase was abruptly interrupted in 1917 when the campus suffered a devastating fire, turning dreams to ashes. But it recovered, with the faculty and students temporarily moved to Ruskin Cave College.
The same year marked a turning point for the institution when it became an official part of the Church of the Nazarene, stepping in to ensure financial survival. A short while after its shift to being a Nazarene institute, it embraced the Southeastern Nazarene College of Georgia within its fold. Despite this step, the school found itself on the brink of bankruptcy, forcing it to sell its campus by 1932.
On the phoenix ashes of the initial setback, the institution made a hasty arrangement on the ex-campus of the now obsolete Walden University on White's Creek. Owning the property seemed an uphill task due to financial constraints, leading it to relocate to the Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. It adopted a new name, "Trevecca Nazarene College (TNC)" in 1934. Realising the need for a permanent address, it in 1935 moved back to where it belonged, Murfreesboro Pike in southeast Nashville. Gradually, it planted itself firmly on the 7-acre campus of Walden University in 1937.
The following years saw the institution grow both physically and academically. President A. B. Mackey bought an adjoining 40-acre (160,000 m2) land, initially for his personal use, but later transferred it to the college. The institution achieved a major milestone as it got accredited in 1969 and began offering master's degrees in 1984. A decade later, it underwent another name change, morphing into "Trevecca Nazarene University (TNU)" in 1995. The turn of the century saw TNU offer its first doctoral degree (an Ed.D.) in 1999, and its first Ph.D. degree in clinical counseling in 2011.
Fast-forward to 2017, Trevecca announced an intriguing collaboration with Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, with current president, Dan Boone being selected as the president-elect of Eastern Nazarene College as well. In March 2017, two institutions' boards of trustees inked a Memorandum of Understanding, ushering in a three-year partnership to explore possibilities of a potential merger. The leadership responsibilities for both the institutions were bestowed upon Boone. However, they were to function autonomously under their respective accrediting bodies with separate boards of governance. By March 2018 though, the proposed merger was called off.
A look at TNU’s leadership legacy yields a rich list of dedicated visionaries such as presidents J. O. MCClurkan (1901–1914), Dr. C. E. Hardy (1915–1919, 1920–1925, 1928–1936), Stephen S. White (1919–1920), John T. Benson (1925–1926), A. O. Hendricks (1926–1928), A.B. Mackey (1936–1963), W. M. Greathouse (1963–1968), Mark R. Moore (1968–1979), Homer J. Adams (1979–1991), Millard C. Reed (1991–2005), and the incumbent Dan Boone (2005–Present).
To sum up, TNU's journey from 1901 till today is a tale of resilience, reinvention, and relentless pursuit of academic excellence.
