Imagine this: the school opened its doors to just 26 girls and a lone boy; yet, it wasn't much later that they welcomed 54 male students to their expanding academic family. Taking over the reins of this coeducational secondary school was Susan Colby, remarkably serving as both its first teacher and principal.
Fast forward to 1858, and interesting developments were underway - the New London Academy was morphed into the New London Literary and Scientific Institute, thanks to the New Hampshire Baptists. Their decision was spurred on by none other than former Governor Anthony Colby and New London's Baptist minister, Ebenezer Dodge. Intriguingly, the new Board of Trustees was a notable mix consisting mostly of locals and Baptists.
By 1854, they had the brilliant Ladies Boarding House, erected on the current New London green, capable of housing about 40 female students and the female faculty. Anthony Colby even bought and shifted the original New London town meeting house to the campus, turning it into Colby Hall, and home to 20 double rooms for the male students!
The year 1878 saw another name change, as we finally see a memoriam to the contributions of the Colby family. The institute became known as the Colby Academy. Ever wondered about Colgate Hall, crucial to Colby's history? It came into being through the generosity of Mary (”Mellie”) Colgate in 1912 and became home to female students, administrative offices, a library, dining room, kitchen, chapel, classrooms, and more!
In 1927, the historic decision to turn the Colby Academy into a junior college and preparatory school solely for women was made. This was the birth of the 'Colby School for Girls.' A few years later, in 1930, the first fourteen women received their associate degrees from this institution.
More notable landmarks followed: McKean Hall in 1930, named for a previous headmaster, and Shepard Hall in 1931, dedicated to one of the initial New London families who served as trustees. A few years later, the institution made its first foray into bachelor programs. However, it was not long before a name tussle saw it shifting to 'Colby–Sawyer College' in 1975.
Fast forward to 1990, Colby–Sawyer College resumed its coeducational nature, welcoming male students back.
