Dillard University

Dillard University, original name, Ross University, was born as the medical faculty of the University of Dominica in 1978, it wasn't until 1985 that the institution earned recognition as higher education, adopting the name of its founder, entrepreneur Robert Ross. The 21st century brought significant changes for the University; the DeVry Education Group acquired it in 2003, aiding students and staff during the 2017 Hurricane Mary crisis. The institution's resilience was palpable as they reopened their doors just six months post the catastrophe. Even more transformative was the 2019 relocation of the campus from Dominica to Barbados, modernizing its programs and adding a plethora of specialties while doing so. The institute's quality education is acknowledged through its accreditation from reputable organizations such as the Barbados Medical Council, the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (U.S Department of Education), and the General Medical Council of Great Britain. Moreover, it honours the "from general to particular" education principle and is closely allied with esteemed institutions like Dillard University, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, Florida Agricultural and Technical University, and Tuskegi University.

From a student's perspective, Dillard University stands out for its unwavering support and engagement both within and beyond the classroom. The support service available to students, facilitated by a dedicated team, ensures no one stands alone in their educational journey. In a further testament to the university's emphasis on holistic development, there are numerous student clubs and associations offering a platform for students to connect, collaborate, and learn beyond the academic curriculum. The enriched campus life, coupled with cutting-edge learning programs and a supportive learning environment, makes Dillard an ideal choice for students keen on acquiring a holistic and globally relevant education. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about moulding world-ready individuals.

History Dillard University

Envision this - the year is 1869, just four short years after the shattering American Civil War, and there’s a profound need to educate the newly freed African Americans in New Orleans, Louisiana, and its surroundings. Stirred by this grave need, the American Missionary Association of the Congregational Church took initiative and gave birth to Dillard University's earliest antecedent - Straight University, on the 12th of June that year.

Now here's a fun little aside, Straight University did not just stop at providing basic academic education. No, it boldly stepped into professional training terrains and established a law department which served for a period from 1874 to 1886. The graduates of this institute made invaluable contributions to local and national Reconstruction as well as post-Reconstruction era civil rights struggles. In 1915, the school adopted the name Straight College, which was more in tune with its focused curriculum.

That very summer of 1868, the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church launched the Union Normal School. Their mission? To bring forth the best teachers. But they didn’t stop at that, this society actively sourced teachers from the northern regions to educate the emancipated southerners and their young ones.

Now listen carefully to this, because this is where the plot thickens. The American Missionary Association didn’t just stop after founding Straight University. They went on to play a crucial role in the birth of some of the most prestigious historically black colleges and universities like Clark Atlanta University, Fisk University, Howard University (alongside Freedmen's Bureau), and many others. Over the years, both Straight University and Union Normal School expanded their horizons, further enhancing their curricula, to offer a level of education that was more comprehensive, more encompassing.

Next, enter New Orleans University which started off with a humble secondary school by the name of 'Gilbert Academy'. However, by the time the 19th century was drawing to a close, it had ventured into the area of professional medical training. Nursing training continued, even after the closure of its medical college in 1911, thanks to the presence of Flint Goodridge Hospital.

In the early 1930s, local leaders, irrespective of their racial backgrounds, strongly felt the need of a larger and more significant African-American learning institute in New Orleans and the wider South. This led to some intense rounds of talks between Straight College and New Orleans University. As a result, on June 6, 1930, Dillard University, named after its patron, James H. Dillard, was chartered.

The stepping stone years of Dillard University were not without their own set of challenges. Right off the bat, its inception was met with resistance from locals unhappy with the prospect of black leadership over white faculty members - a classic example of the prevalent racial tension of that era. Additionally, increased African-American presence in Gentilly, as Dillard begun its classes, unsettled some residents. In attempt to strike a balance, the mediator, Edgar B. Stern Sr, proposed the name of Will W. Alexander, a white Southern preacher, to be the first acting president of the institution. His prior experience as the director of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation came in handy during his presidential stint from 1935–1936.

Progress may have been slow during initial years, but Dillard refused to give up. The University welcomed its first batch of students in the fall of 1935, and its allure soon caught the attention of many renowned scholars who eagerly joined its teaching faculty. However, this journey wasn’t without its rough patches. August 2005 saw Dillard University bear the brunt of Hurricane Katrina with extensive flood damage to its campus and a fire destroying the Nelson Hall.

Life at Dillard University saw a temporary halt in spring 2006. Yet, the university held on to its traditions and celebrated graduation that year in July. By September 2006, classes were resumed and students returned back to their second home.

Fast forward to 2003, Ray Charles, the legendary musician, left behind a million-dollar provision in his will, to establish the first professorship of African-American culinary history in the country, at Dillard. In 2019, Dillard formed a partnership with Ross University School of Medicine aiming to increase the number of African American physicians in the US. A year later, in 2020, Dillard received the biggest single gift in its history, a handsome $5 million donation from MacKenzie Scott.

That, my young friends, is a glimpse through the history of Dillard University, an institute that rose like a phoenix time and again. Be it wars, financial constraints, racial barriers, or natural calamities - Dillard continued to thrive, thanks to its sheer determination, undying spirit, and the firm belief in the power of education.
