Pioneer leaders of the African-American community, P.B.S. Pinchback, Theophile T. Allain, and Henry Demas conceived the idea of an institution for higher education for people of color at the Louisiana State Constitutional Convention in 1879. Their efforts were driven by a rich history of free people of color who valued education and owned properties in Louisiana before the American Civil War.
Fast forward to 1880, the Louisiana General Assembly gave birth to 'Southern University for Colored Students', initially placed in bustling New Orleans. The doors of this groundbreaking institution first opened on March 7, 1881, admitting a total of 12 students. The institution initially operated from within the four walls of a former temple, between the thoroughfares of St. Charles and Camp streets.
Recognizing the importance of satisfying federal requirements to support higher education for all irrespective of color and race, Louisiana's legislature in 1890 designated Southern with land grant status. This milestone marked the establishment of an Agricultural and Mechanical department within the institution. In terms of presence, by 1904, an advanced level educational facility was operating from the heart of Uptown New Orleans, catering to both male and female students, as reported by "Picayune Guide to New Orleans".
Subsequent years ushered in fresh changes. By 1914, increasing pressure from residents and white neighbors in the Tulane area necessitated a move. The university then relocated to Scotlandville, strategically nestled north of Baton Rouge along Scott's Bluff overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. This turn of events coincided with the appointment of a new university's president, Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark who was recognized as an African-American leader in Baton Rouge and had previously shown leadership at Baton Rouge College and the Louisiana Colored Teachers Association.
The year 1921 brought another major development. The Louisiana Constitutional Convention approved the much-needed reorganization and expansion of Southern University. The consequent Legislative Act 100 of 1922 paved the way for greater control by the State Board of Education. These transformations increased student enrollment from 47 to a substantial 500, and served as the foundation for what would soon become the Southern University Laboratory School System which began operations in 1922. With its first accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1936, the school has so far awarded over 5,000 high school diplomas.
Unsurprisingly, the baton of leadership was passed to Clark's son, Dr. Felton Grandison Clark shortly after his retirement in 1938. F.G. Clark, previously a dean at Southern since 1934, spearheaded more progress. During his 30-year reign, the number of erected buildings rose to 33 out of 114, and student population surged from 500 to a whopping 10,000 students.
Equality in education took a heroic leap in 1946 when Charles J. Hatfield, III, decidedly filed a lawsuit as a response to LSU Law School's refusal to admit him due to his African American heritage. Inspired by this, a brand-new law program was established in 1947 at Southern University, evolving to what we know today as the Southern University Law Center. Expanding further, Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) and Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) were founded in 1956 and 1964 respectively.
Trouble rocked the campus briefly in 1972 when two student activists were murdered. Amidst protests against the administration's policies and decision-making, Denver Smith and Leonard Brown were shot outside the Old Auditorium. Ripples from this tragic event led to temporary closure of the campus. The campus then witnessed unprecedented growth with the institution consistently enrolling over 10,000 students between 1970 and 1990, earning the title of being the largest HBCU in the nation.
Fast forward to the 21st century, between 2004 and 2013, Southern University made strides by clinching the 4th spot nationally for being a baccalaureate-origin institution of black male doctorate recipients. As recent as 2021, Southern was awarded the prestigious R2 Carnegie Classification (Doctoral University; High Research Activity), making it one of only 11 HBCUs to secure this status and the first in Louisiana.
