History Xavier University of Louisiana

Once upon a time, way back in the late 1800s, there was an extraordinary woman named Katharine Drexel. Daughter of a wealthy banker - Francis Drexel, Katharine used her inheritance to create and staff various institutions for the education and evangelization of Native Americans and African Americans. She built her team with sisters from the religious order she founded, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, and also served as its first Superior General.

When Katharine noticed a void in Catholic education for young black people in the southern regions, most notably during the Jim Crow era, she started planning a high school in the vibrant city of New Orleans. She set her sights on a property previously owned by Southern University, a black institution which had relocated under duress from neighbouring white communities.

To avoid public backlash - Kathleen knew her reputation for establishing black schools might attract - she sent a Josephite priest named Pierre Oscar LeBeau to survey the property. The purchase was facilitated by Kathleen's agent, Harry McEnerny on April 13, 1915, for a sum of US$18,000. Despite their best efforts to keep the purpose under wraps, the news got out, causing vandals to smash all the windows at the site.

Despite the obstacles, the high school opened its doors on September 27, 1915, under the name Southern University of New Orleans. Later, the institution was renamed after Francis Xavier, the namesake of Katharine's father. By May 1916, they incorporated under the state laws of Louisiana with the moniker, "Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People, of Louisiana," chiselling the new name "Xavier University" onto the stone slab above the main entrance.

In 1917, the university started a training programme for black teachers, as Archbishop James H. Blenk was excited about the prospect of having their graduates teach at six newly planned black parishes. Fast forward to 1921, the Louisiana Department of Education officially recognised "Xavier University" as a State Approved High School. By the following year, it was the only Catholic school in the United States that offered a full four years' high school course to colored boys. Although this claim may not be accurate, it remains a significant milestone in the history of Xavier University.

In 1925, Xavier University of Louisiana officially came into being with the establishment of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Edward Brunner, a Josephite priest, served as its first president. In 1927, The College of Pharmacy was initiated. Drexel's sisters, alongside the Josephites, served as the institute's first male teachers and chaplains.

Katharine, realizing that the university required its unique identity and room for expansion, purchased a tract of undeveloped land at the corner of Palmetto and Pine Streets in 1929. The Gothic Revival-style Main Building, Convent and Library, constructed of Indiana limestone, were completed between 1932 and 1937. Xavier's Main Administration Building was dedicated by Cardinal Dennis Joseph Dougherty, the Archbishop of Philadelphia, on Columbus Day, October 12, 1932, and it's now a City of New Orleans landmark.

The vibrant journey of Xavier University of Louisiana continued with intriguing episodes such as the secret accommodation for the Freedom Riders in May 1961, Pope John Paul II addressing the presidents of all U.S. Catholic colleges from Xavier's courtyard in 1987, and the recovery following extensive damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Significant events also included receiving a donation of $17.5 million from Qatar for hurricane recovery and expanding the College of Pharmacy in 2006, Senator Barack Obama’s visit for the commencement speech in August 2006 and during the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, receiving the "Katrina Compassion Award" from the U.S. government for the university's efforts in rebuilding the neighbourhoods affected by the hurricane.

The most recent milestones include evacuation during Hurricane Ida in August 2021, exactly 16 years after Hurricane Katrina, and resuming normal operations on September 13. Just a year prior, in July 2020, the university received $20 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, which marks the most significant single gift in the university's history.

So, dear reader, this is the summarized history of Xavier University - a tale of resilience, determination, growth, and the passion to create an inclusive educational journey, all originating from the vision of a benevolent woman named Katharine Drexel.
