Let’s rewind time to 1948, to Albany, New York. Governor Thomas E. Dewey was a man with a vision for change. He was keen as mustard to take New York’s scattered, unconnected colleges and universities and give them a common, proud identity. And what a bright idea it turned out to be, eventually leading to the creation of the mighty State University of New York, or as we know, love, and cherish it, SUNY. No rocket science, just pure commitment and clear vision.
The first phase of SUNY, launched in 1948, wasn't quite the behemoth it is today. It only included 29 colleges and universities spread out like a wave from the east to the west of New York. Pretty substantial for a start, isn’t it? As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day, and SUNY wasn't built overnight either!
However, no sooner was the ink dry, the expansion wheels were already churning under the leadership of Alvin C. Eurich, the first president of SUNY. He was determined not to rest on his laurels, and within three years, nine additional teachers colleges were swinging from SUNY's vine. Alvin, you were some go-getter!
Just as a cup of desi masala chai isn’t complete without its spices, SUNY wouldn't be SUNY without embracing diverse disciplines! So, the 1950s and 60s saw the addition of colleges specializing in arts, science, medicine, and engineering like cherries onto our SUNY sundae. Now, isn’t that a tempting platter for our Indian scholars?
The SUNY torch was then passed on to Samuel B. Gould in 1964, who steered the ship for nine years. He proved to be a whizz-kid, taking SUNY to greater strengths and transforming it into a place for every aspirant seeking high-quality education irrespective of their background, much like our Indian ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'the world is one family'.
From then, there was no looking back. The 80s, sprinkled with technicolor dreams, led to a bonanza of technological advancements and academic pursuits shaping SUNY’s extraordinary voyage. The real cream on this bagel? The establishment of campuses in distant lands, including Asia. Quite an enticing nugget for us folks right here in India wouldn't you agree?
Fast-forward to the 21st century, SUNY sits pretty as the largest, most comprehensive system of higher education in the United States. With over 64 campuses, catering to half a million students from all corners of the world. Now, that's what we call a full house!
SUNY's development has been a textbook example of 'how to turn farfetched dreams into reality.' From its inception by the incredibly forward-thinking Dewey to its current standing, this ‘Pearl of the Empire State’ has been a bigger circus than anyone could ever have imagined!
Today, SUNY stands tall as a land of opportunities, offering a smorgasbord of subjects to explore. So, whether you're a science fanatic, a lover of the arts, or a business mastermind, there's a perfect SUNY pied-à-terre for you. As we say in India, SUNY truly is a 'sone ki chidiya' (Golden Bird) in the world of higher education. Now, aren’t you ready to fly with it?
