History Barnard College

For more than two centuries, there was a time, from 1754 to 1883 to be precise, when only boys were seen in the undergraduate classes of Columbia College. Enter 1889, and a ray of hope emerged. The credit goes to the relentless advocacy of Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard, a visionary who happened to be deaf. His name rings a few bells, right? Yes, that's right, it's the college named after him that we're about to talk about - Barnard College.

Barnard was the 10th president of Columbia and a strong advocate for women's education. He believed men and women should sit shoulder to shoulder in coeducational settings. Can you imagine logistically implementing this equality in the 19th century? Challenges galore! But nothing deterred Barnard. He started making propositions for Columbia to admit women as early as 1879. Persistent, wasn't he?

Getting rejected by Columbia's Board of Trustees, Barnard still managed to get them to outline a detailed study syllabus for women in 1883. While the women were not physically present in the Columbia classes, they sat for exams based on this syllabus, allowing the first female graduate to claim her bachelor's degree in 1887. She did not let her pursuit of knowledge end there, seized the opportunity, and persuaded the board in 1889 to venture into creating what we now know as Barnard College.

Starting with a humble setting, Barnard College once functioned from a rented brownstone at 343 Madison Avenue. A dedicated faculty of six were the torchbearers of education for 36 curious students. Clouds of change started gathering in 1892 when Columbia announced it would move to Morningside Heights. The impending move set the stage for a new Barnard campus nearby - all thanks to the generous donations from Mary E. Brinckerhoff, Elizabeth Milbank Anderson, and Martha Fiske.

Fulfilling Brinckerhoff's condition of purchasing land within 1000 feet of the Columbia campus and setting foundations for the iconic Milbank, Brinckerhoff, and Fiske Halls, the college starting functioning at the new location by 1897. The journey, however, wasn't smooth. In spite of flourishing in its academics, the college had debts to clear.

During the early days, Ella Weed supervised Barnard College only to be succeeded by Emily James Smith, the first dean. Jessica Finch, one of the faculty, is known to have coined the term "current events" during her tenure at the college. Have you realised how casually we use this term now?

Rich, by 1903, provided a master plan for the campus development. Though only one block saw the light of day, his vision planted the seed for new premises such as Students' Hall (now known as Barnard Hall) and Hewitt Hall. These structures joined the trio of halls in gracing the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Running strong till mid-20th century, Barnard achieved its initial goal of imparting world-class education to women. To support this claim, allow me to mention that from 1920 to 1974, Barnard was only outranked by Hunter College and the University of California, Berkeley in the number of women graduates who earned doctorates. In the '70s, the college faced pressure to merge with male-only Columbia College, but Barnard didn't give in, thanks to its president - Jacquelyn Mattfeld.
