Nearly a century ago, in 1936, a cherished institution took root under the protective wings of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Known as Marymount Manhattan College, this was a humble two-year women's college initially conceived as an offshoot of Marymount College, from the tranquil heartlands of Tarrytown in New York.
The story becomes even more intriguing in 1948, when the college shifted its base to East 71st Street. With this transformative move, it evolved into a fully-fledged four-year institution, proudly conferring bachelor's degrees. The first batch of graduates to march out of MMC's hallowed halls were in 1950 — a momentous occasion indeed!
A key turning point arrived in 1961, when MMC won the prestigious absolute charter as an independent four-year college. This recognition was bestowed by none other than the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Right from 1961, the institution shed its religious moorings and opened its arms to students of all creeds. However, it's curious to note that the Catholic Church still listed MMC within the Catholic Directory until 2005.
Around 1976, another important development took place. Finch College known as a "finishing school" for young women, was forced to close its doors. Its records, along with a legacy of students including Tricia Nixon Cox, the daughter of former US President Richard Nixon, were transferred to MMC.
Deviation from tradition was marked in 1990 when Regina Peruggi, an ex-partner of Rudy Giuliani, assumed office as the first lay president of MMC. Adding another feather to its cap, MMC welcomed to its campus the 55th Street Residence Hall in 2001. This became one of the tallest dorms across America with student accommodation spread across 32 floors of a soaring 46-story building.
Expansion was ongoing, and in 2015 MMC proudly inaugurated a new residence hall at Cooper Square, geared especially for upper classmen. With 12 floors and room for 270 students, this was yet another significant milestone.
At the onset of 2017, MMC boasted of nearly 2,000 students from 48 US states and 36 countries. Accompanying its foundation in liberal arts, MMC offers more than 30 diverse majors, 40 minors, and exclusive pre-professional programs. Talking about innovation, MMC has a unique degree program for incarcerated women at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, offering an Associates of Arts degree in social science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.
Fast forward to 2013, when MMC found itself under the limelight, thanks to an article in Backstage. The publication named it one of the finest colleges producing Broadway and Tony Award-nominated actors. This list included distinguished institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, Oberlin Conservatory, University of Michigan, Ithaca College, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
