Once upon a time in 1905, not so different from our own, an extraordinary institution was born out of the vision of a German-American conductor, Frank Damrosch and a philanthropic banker, James Loeb. This was none other than the Juilliard School's predecessor Institute of Musical Art (IMA). Frank, as it happens, was a godson of Franz Liszt, which should tell you of his profound immersion in music.
The idea was simple but game-changing. Frank and James sought to end the days when American students had to venture to Europe to learn the art of Music. They believed, quite rightly, that the US could, and should, showcase its own premier music school. And so, the Institute of Musical Art was formed with significant funding by James Loeb. Its objective was to develop a true musical culture among all classes, offering instructions and educational assets that weren't dependent on students' financial status.
The Institute opened its doors to eager students at the former Lenox Mansion, Fifth Avenue and 12th Street, on the bright morning of October 11, 1905. Women formed most of the student body, and although none were involved in orchestral activities, this didn't prevent the school from having 467 students in its first year! Over the years, the number of students doubled, reflecting the growing recognition of the institute.
Fast forward to 1919, a wealthy textile merchant, Augustus D. Juilliard, bequeathed a significant amount of money in his will for the advancement of music, leading up to the establishment of the Juilliard Musical Foundation. The foundation, still waving the flag high for the aspirations of Frank Damrosch and James Loeb, birthed the Juilliard Graduate School in 1924.
Years passed and by 1926, The Juilliard School of Music was born out of the merger between the Institute and the Graduate School. The following year, the school relocated to 130 Claremont Avenue right next to the initial premises of its predecessor, the IMA. The two schools ran under the same administration yet retained their distinct identities.
In 1946, the Juilliard School was consolidated by the able leadership of William Schuman, the school's third president, an American composer and first Pulitzer Prize for Music winner. He introduced many reforms which greatly raised the school's academic standards. He also ensured that the school's admission was not limited to only Americans.
Fast forward to the new millennium. Juilliard had already established itself as a prestigious institution producing top graduates who accounted for approximately 20% of the Big Five American Orchestras. Remarkably, in 1999, the Juilliard School was awarded the National Medal of Arts, becoming the first educational institution to receive the prestigious award.
Over the years, Juilliard became a worldwide phenomenon, receiving generous gifts and donations from various corners of the globe. In September 2015, another milestone was unveiled; the school announced its first full-scale expansion outside the US to Tianjin, China, and started to offer a Master of Music degree program in 2020.
Even in such challenging times, Juilliard revised its mode of teaching by switching to online classes and suspending live performance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It's not an understatement to say the Juilliard School, borne out of a dream more than a century ago, continues to shape the future of the global music industry, while standing as a beacon for aspiring musicians in the United States and around the world. It serves as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and a commitment to musical excellence. Such a legacy speaks volumes about where passion, philanthropy, and the zeal to create a robust musical culture can lead us to. Even so, the story of the Juilliard School is just beginning. The best tunes, as they say, are yet to be played.
