History Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art

In the mid-nineteenth century, America was witnessing rapid industrial growth under the entrepreneurial genius of magnates such as Peter Cooper. This son of a working-class family, despite having only a year's formal education, was a figurehead in American industrial history. Born in 1791, Cooper made his fortune from multiple ventures including the first steam railroad engine, a glue factory, an iron foundry, and the successful laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable by the New York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph Company he co-founded.

Peter Cooper had a lifelong dream - to share the privilege of a good education with young talent across America, something he did not have. So, in 1859, he poured his money and heart into founding The Cooper Union, envisioning an institution "open and free to all". Cooper Union aimed to break down education accessibility barriers, promising no discrimination based on ethnicity, religion or gender. By 1863, The New York Times hailed its contribution, acknowledging it as a haven for those enthusiastic about higher education but had limited means.

Cooper Union started as "the Union", providing night classes for adults in applied sciences, architectural drawing and photography. It also had the unique "Female School of Design" which had day classes for women on telegraphy, typewriting and shorthand. The institution also had New York City's first free public reading room, setting a benchmark long before the city’s public library system was introduced. Among its early beneficiaries were luminaries like Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Thomas Alva Edison, and William Francis Deegan.

As Cooper Union's fame spread, Andrew Carnegie stepped forward in 1902 with funds to introduce a daytime engineering college. This led to an expansion in its course offerings, with the addition of a five-year chemistry program in 1883. Over the years, it became a hub for nurturing artists, architects and engineers; many of them went on to become leaders in their respective fields.

However, the Cooper Union's progress didn't stop there. Born from this institution was the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, a brainchild of Peter Cooper's granddaughters - Sarah, Eleanor, and Amy Hewitt in 1897. Also, the university is known for its momentous, historic speeches in its Great Hall, which was the site of Abraham Lincoln’s historic address in 1860, and speeches by other great leaders.

No conversation about Cooper Union can be complete without mentioning the Foundation Building, an architectural marvel of its time. Designed by Fred A. Petersen, it was the first structure in New York City to feature rolled-iron I-beams for structural support. Peter Cooper himself had invented and produced these beams. The building also had the distinction of being the first to have an elevator shaft, reflecting Cooper's belief that elevators were the technology of the future. The Foundation Building has since been recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a New York City Landmark.

Over time, the Cooper Union expanded into schools of architecture, fine arts, and engineering. Recognizing the need for a more modern facility, the aging Hewitt Academic Building was replaced by 41 Cooper Square in 2002. This LEED-certified, “green” structure was replete with innovatively designed spaces for students and faculty, loaded with natural lighting, and served as a testament to Cooper Union’s commitment to the future of education.

Throughout its more than 160-year history, the Cooper Union has remained committed to Peter Cooper’s dream of providing comprehensive, barrier-free education. From the classroom to impactful societal contributions, the influence of this extraordinary institution is far-reaching indeed, and is a testament to the power of education.
