History CUNY - John Jay College of Criminal Justice

In the bustling city of New York, back in 1964, an independent, degree-granting school of police science was proposed by a committee of the Board of Higher Education. Named initially as The College of Police Science (COPS) of the City University of New York, it welcomed its first batch of students in September 1965. Just two years later, the school broadened its vision and changed its name to reflect the same. The name John Jay College of Criminal Justice was chosen, paying tribute to the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court and a Founding Father of the country, John Jay.

Can you imagine attending classes within the depths of a Police Academy? Well, that's exactly where the students of John Jay College found themselves, with their classrooms on East 20th Street. Leonard E. Reisman was the pioneer president of the college from 1964, succeeded by Donald Riddle in 1970. As the academic year of 1970 set in, the college found itself amid intense political storms. President Nixon's extension of the Cambodian Campaign sparked heated discussions within the campus, proving the college to be not just a hub of academic excellence but of activism as well.

Did you know that the college was once at the brink of closure, due to President Nixon's handling of the Vietnam War? The faculty voted in favor of closure, but the decision was ultimately handed over to the students. After much debate, the students decided by a close vote to keep the college open- a decision reflective of their resilience and determination.

Keeping it's doors open to fervor for learning wasn't always smooth-sailing. The college found itself navigating through rough waters when in a graduate course on the sociology of law, issues with the FBI came to light. Director J. Edgar Hoover took offense, leading to a tense stand-off, finally resolved after Hoover's death in 1972.

Fast forward a few years to 1970 when CUNY's Open Admissions Program was introduced. This meant that any high school graduate with a passion for learning could now attend the university. This decision led to a massive influx of students, with undergraduates at John Jay skyrocketing from 2,600 in 1969 to 8,600 in 1973. A key after-effect of this policy was the introduction of more "civilian" students to the college, shifting focus towards a more comprehensive schooling approach.

Following years saw Riddle resigning and Gerald W.Lynch stepping into the college president's role in 1977- a post he held onto until 2004. What's also remarkable is how the college managed to soak in the impact of New York City's fiscal crisis in the late 1970s. President Lynch, stating how the college was uniquely positioned to address issues of crime, public productivity and budget management, led the charge. With collective efforts, John Jay managed to survive the financial tightrope.

By 1980, President Lynch encouraged and established the college's first doctorate program, PhD in Criminal Justice. His presidency spanning two decades also saw growth in faculty and student enrollment, expansion of the school's external activities and constant evolution of its curriculum. His tenure marked the college shifting it's focus towards liberal arts, establishing an Ethnic Studies track and strengthening its Women's Studies program.

Progressing into 2011, with increasing college square footage, a 13-story tower was added to the west side of Haaren Hall. The college was also blessed with its largest-ever donation of $5 million in 2012 from an alumnus, Dr.Andrew Shiva. Finally, in 2017 , Karol Mason, previous Assistant Attorney General, took over as college president following the retirement of Jeremy Travis. The journey of John Jay College wasn't just the crafting of an institution, but the weaving of a narrative that symbolizes resilience, growth and a constant strive towards excellence."
