History List College The Jewish Theological Seminary

Picture this - the year is 1801, and a child is born in Prague who would later lead a revolution in the world of Jewish religious learning. This child was Rabbi Zecharias Frankel. As he grew, so did his love for Judaism, tradition, and research. So deeply entrenched was his dedication that he became the leading figure among 19th-century German Jews. Yet, despite his traditional views, Frankel was open to a modern scientific study of Judaism, making him a complex, multifaceted figure of his time.

Fast forward to 1845, Frankel was involved in a critical Assembly in Frankfurt am Main. Regrettably, this event signaled Frankel's separation from the Reform movement as their ideologies were becoming too radical for his taste. However, his journey wasn't over. In nine years, he would spearhead a rabbinical school, the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau.

Imagine now, turning the pages of history to 1886. In the New World, two charismatic rabbis Sabato Morais and Henry Pereira Mendes, together with some prominent lay Jewish leaders, pick up Frankel's torch. They founded the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in Philadelphia and New York. Their mission was nothing short of preserving historical Judaism's knowledge and practice amidst rapid Reform movement growth in North America.

Envision the year 1887; JTS held its first class of ten students within the aged walls of the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, the oldest congregation of New York City. A turning point was soon to come when the Reform movement publicized the Pittsburgh Platform in 1885, leading Morais to halt his efforts promoting moderation within the Reformers. Instead, he began strengthening Orthodox institutions, including the creation of the "Jewish Theological Seminary Association" in 1886 as an Orthodox counterbalance against the Reform movement.

In 1886, as a powerful response to the Reform movement, rabbis Morais, Alexander Kohut, and Bernard Drachman established the Jewish Theological Seminary Association in New York City. These dignitaries modeled this new academic institution after Rabbi Frankel's seminary, inheriting his approach towards "Positive-Historical" Judaism, realizing the necessity to adapt and yet stay rooted in tradition.

Fast forward to 1913, under Solomon Schechter's leadership, a new entity is born, a formal group uniting member synagogues who shared Schechter's ideologies: the United Synagogue of America. This affiliate continues to maintain a strong alliance with JTS and echoes its ethos.

JTS saw considerable change over the years, from the establishment of different departments to the addition of landmark historical gates in 1934. It faced challenges too, like the devastating library fire in 1966 destroying a wealth of knowledge.

Flash forward to 1986, a new era begins with Ismar Schorsch assuming office as Chancellor. Over the course of Schorsch's tenure, the Seminary sees impressive growth, particularly in its Graduate School, earning the title of "the most extensive academic program in advanced Judaica in North America."

Leap ahead to 2007, Arnold Eisen rises to take charge as Chancellor, bringing a fresh perspective from his background in social science. Under his leadership, JTS became more inclusive, accepting openly gay, lesbian, and bisexual students into their rabbinical and cantorial programs from March 2007.

Indeed, from its riveting history, JTS, The Jewish Theological Seminary, remains a beacon of Conservative Judaism, embracing tradition, evolving with change and leaving an enduring legacy in the world of Jewish religious learning.
