The University came to life in 1830, with the vision of A. Gallatin, a US finance minister, who proposed the creation of a substantial educational establishment in New York. It fostered a merit-based admission system, rather than one focusing on social standing, a principle NYU still adheres to. NYU's first academic year started in 1831, with its setting reminiscent of highly advanced European universities. Initially situated in Clinton Hall, NYU acquired several acres of land in Washington Square in 1833, paving way for its expansion. Law school and Polytechnic Institute were established in 1835, with the latter earning the distinction of being the oldest institute of its kind in the US.

Through the lens of intending students, NYU offers an enriching and comprehensive academic atmosphere. With a focus on merit rather than social standing, the University values academic achievements and motivation to learn, offering equal opportunities to all applicants. Its diverse student body, coupled with internationally renowned faculty and programs, provides exposure to global cultures and learning models - essential attributes in today's interconnected world. For Indian students seeking a global dimension to their education and aspiring for opportunities in medicine, chemistry, and economics, NYU is undeniably an attractive destination.

History New York University

Albert Gallatin, a notable figure who served as Secretary of the Treasury under presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, had a vision. Set in the heart of a burgeoning and rapid-growing city, he wanted to create a system of "rational and practical education" that would be graciously open to all, regardless of social class or birthright. In 1830, he convened a three-day "literary and scientific convention" at City Hall, laying the grounds for the creation of a new university.

By April 18, 1831, Gallatin's dream took a palpable form. A prominent group from New York City's diverse pool of merchants, bankers, and traders rallied behind him, setting in motion the establishment of what is now known as New York University (NYU). The distinguished Gallatin was elected as the first president. Moments later, on April 21, the institution received its official charter from the New York State Legislature, standing proud as the University of the City of New York. However, it has been lovingly called New York University since its inception and officially renamed such in 1896.

In 1832, the inaugural classes of NYU took place in the rented rooms of the four-story Clinton Hall, conveniently nearby City Hall. By 1835, the university had set up its first professional school: the School of Law. NYU was unique at the time; it was non-denominational, breaking the American tradition of colleges being affiliated with religious institutions. It also holds another distinction - the American Chemical Society was birthed within its walls in 1876.

NYU thrived and expanded post-establishment, boasting an enrollment of 9,300 by 1917, making it one of the country's largest universities. The burgeoning student population prompted a shift to a larger campus at University Heights in the Bronx, ushered by the tireless efforts of Chancellor Henry Mitchell MacCracken. In 1914, Washington Square College was established as the downtown undergraduate college of NYU. A testament to NYU's growing influence was its acceptance into the Association of American Universities in 1950, joining the exclusive ranks of leading public and private research universities in the U.S.

The late 1960s and early 70s brought NYU face to face with financial crisis engulfing New York City and its institutions. To mitigate this, NYU President James McNaughton Hester brokered for a sale which transferred the University Heights campus to the City University of New York in 1973. This period saw the transfer of several NYU administrative operations but maintained the graduate schools at Washington Square.

NYU displayed a dramatic transformation in the early 2000s, becoming a global institution. Applications skyrocketed, increasing by an astonishing 114% from 2007 to 2018. Concurrently, NYU's acceptance rates diminished, hitting an all-time low of 8% in 2023. A key announcement in 2018 further amplified interest in NYU: the New York University Grossman School of Medicine declared it would provide full-tuition scholarships to all current and future students in their MD program.

As the torch in NYU's logo shines bright, symbolizing its service to New York City, the glow of this esteemed institution has been growing ever brighter since its inception. As it prepares for its bicentennial in 2031, NYU continues to match strides with the fast-paced world while still retaining its commitment to providing quality education for all.
