History The New School

In the hustle and bustle of iconic New York, a beacon of progressive educational thought was birthed in the year 1919. The brainchild of this novel concept was a group of forward-thinking educators who were not so pleased with the loyalty oath they were compelled to swear at Columbia University. So began the journey of what was then called "The New School for Social Research."

Over the years, this institute went through a series of identity changes. In the span between 1997 to 2005, it was known as the New School University, after which it took on the name "The New School," with each of its colleges adopting a new moniker.

Times were harsh in the 1930s, particularly in Nazi Germany and various other oppressive regimes in Europe. The stalwarts at The New School turned this adversity into an opportunity - they established a refuge for besieged academics. This place of sanctuary, named the University in Exile and École libre des hautes études, was formed in 1933 as a graduate division. In no time, the University in Exile was recognized by the State of New York and was renamed the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science by the year 1934.

What set The New School for Social Research tick was the motive that fueled its foundation. Brainy scholars like Alvin Johnson, the economist, and Charles A. Beard and James Harvey Robinson, the historians, among others, looked to create a space where adults could explore a wide range of topics freely and independently. Their goal was to understand the genesis and growth of existing orders – a noble purpose, isn't it?

Going back in time to October 1917, we find Columbia University demanding a loyalty oath related to World War I from its faculty and students. Discontent was ripe, and a few professors were shown the door. Prof. Charles A. Beard resigned as a sign of protest, though he supported the war. His companion, James Harvey Robinson, also resigned in 1919 and joined the faculty at the New School.

The New School was unique in its approach. Conservative academic qualifications were not a prerequisite, as the institute was open to anyone, in theory. The structuring of the courses was different as well. Lectures were followed by group discussions, while special conferences were held for those with research expertise. Notable teachers at the New School included economist Thorstein Veblen, political scientists Wesley Clair Mitchell, historian Roscoe Pound among others. Over time, the school started to offer degrees adhering to the traditional university model. Even John Cage, an experimental composer, came to studey at the New School in 1933 and later taught the subject of Experimental Composition at the institution which also inspired the Fluxus Movement.

Interestingly, the New School's motto "To the Living Spirit" has a story behind it. In 1937, Thomas Mann noticed that the Nazis had torn down a plaque bearing the inscription – "be the Living Spirit" from a building at Heidelberg University. He proposed that the University in Exile should adopt this inscription as its motto, signifying that the 'living spirit,' was under threat in Europe, but would find a home in their school. Director of the New School, Alvin Johnson took up the idea, and the motto has guided the division till today.

A division by the name Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science was started in 1933 as the University in Exile, mainly for Jewish academics who had been dismissed from their teaching positions by the Italian fascist rule. Over the years, the University in Exile and its successors turned out to be the intellectual core of the New School. Illustrious personalities associated with it include psychologists Erich Fromm, Max Wertheimer and Aron Gurwitsch, political theorists Hannah Arendt and Leo Strauss, philosopher Hans Jonas, and composer Hanns Eisler.

The year 2018 saw another significant development - the New University in Exile Consortium was formed. This group exhibited global inclusiveness, involving many colleges and universities worldwide. The bulk of their work involves hosting at least one exiled scholar every year, providing them both academic and personal relocation support.

The New School was also pivotal in establishing the École Libre des Hautes Études, especially after the Nazi invasion of France. The school welcomed scholars who taught in French, including famous philosopher Jacques Maritain, anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, and linguist Roman Jakobson.

Between 1940-1949, The New School launched the "Dramatic Workshop," a pioneering theatre education program. The Department Chair hired German emigrant theatre director Erwin Piscator, with Stella Adler (acting), Lee Strasburg (directing), and Herbert Berghoff (playwriting) as team members. This illustrious workshop shaped the careers of several renowned actors and playwrights like Beatrice Arthur, Harry Belafonte
