Step back in time to 1743, to the humble beginnings of the University of Delaware, founded by a Presbyterian minister named Francis Alison. Reverend Alison started a "Free School" in his Pennsylvania home with the approval of the Philadelphia Synod of Presbyterian Church. With time, the school underwent several name and location changes, and finally moved to Newark in 1765. The colonial Penn government granted it a charter as the Academy of Newark in 1769.
By 1818, the trustees of the academy had big dreams and ideas. Seeking to transform the academy into a full-fledged college, they decided to run a lottery to raise funds. Was it a gamble? Yes, but nothing great ever came without risks. Jump forward to 1832, and the trustees found the perfect location for the college and began construction of the college building, which we now know as the Old College.
Newark College officially opened its hearts and doors to the students on May 8, 1834, and by 1835, the Newark academy pledged its educational responsibilities to the college. This move was strategically done to strengthen the layered foundations of Newark College. The magnificent east and west wings of the Newark Academy Building we see today were constructed during 1841 and 1842, to make classroom sessions more comfortable and engaging for the students.
1843 marked a significant milestone as the college's name was changed to Delaware College and some financial challenges began to emerge. During the lean period in the late 1840s, a scholarship program was introduced to attract more students and boost revenues, which took enrollment levels ahead of its contemporaries. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the college had to halt its operations in 1859, but the academy stood the test of time.
Fast forward to 1867, after the Civil War, the trustees lobbied to designate Delaware College as Delaware's land-grant college under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act, and boy did it work. On January 12, 1869, the college board signed to become the land-grant institution. The college flourished with the new status and funding, erecting new buildings, expanding the faculty, and attracting more students.
1872 to 1885 were even more extraordinary years, as the college doors were then open to women students, increasing diversity in the campus. Also, in these years, Congress's Hatch Act offered more funding for Delaware College to establish an agricultural experiment station. The college also adorned itself with its official colors, blue and gold in 1889, further sealing its identity.
By 1921, the Delaware College grew to become the University of Delaware and officially embraced the coeducation system in 1945. Post World War II, aided by the G.I. Bill, the University started to grow not only in terms of the student population but also its influence. From veterans to academics to research scholars, the University opened its doors wide and hasn't looked back ever since.
Fast-forward to the 21st century; this institution has become a beacon of knowledge and progress. In 2009, it purchased an assembly plant from Chrysler to develop the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus, a hub for health sciences, research laboratories, and a home to the national institute for innovation in manufacturing biopharmaceuticals. To this day, the University of Delaware remains committed to furthering the boundaries of knowledge and nurturing the next generation of leaders.
