Over eight decades ago, on the 6th of March, 1934, the seeds of Salve Regina College were sown by the Sisters of Mercy of Providence. In Latin, the name translates to "Hail Queen." The devout sisters were inspired by promoting "virtue, and piety and learning," as stated in the charter conferred by the state of Rhode Island.
A little over a decade later, in 1947, the college hit a jackpot! Robert Goelet IV, an accomplished businessman, gifted the college a sumptuous 50-room mansion called Ochre Court, proving to be a significant addition to the institution's repertoire. The first class was inaugurated later that year, comprising of 58 distinct personalities, marking the academic genesis.
Flying the flag for Salve Regina College and helming its arrival was Mary Matthew Doyle. Multitalented, she adorned two hats, serving as the first president of the college and the first Mother Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy of Providence. Born in 1870, Mary's leadership insights guided the institution until she breathed her last in 1960.
Fast forward to the 1950s, and it was a kind of a building boom for the campus. A pair joined the exclusive campus. Moore Hall came as a generous gift in 1955 from Cornelius Moore, who wore the hat of a Newport mayor and trustees' chairman. Along with it, McAuley Hall, originally the Vinland Estate, was gifted by Florence Burden.
Tradition has always been valued at Salve Regina, but the college was never averse to modern thinking. It began as a women's only institution but evolved into a coeducational setup in 1973. Further evolution took place in 1975 with the introduction of graduate programs. The college proudly transformed into Salve Regina University in 1991.
The woman at the helm of this transformative era was Lucille McKillop. With her dedicated leadership from 1973 to 1994, the student count surged from 1000 to over 2300, while the number of majors jumped from nine to 25.
Entering the new millennium, the campus had grown to a 60-acre estate, dotted with 18 buildings that bore historical significance. The architectural finesse of the university earned it the Historic Preservation Award from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission in 2000. The following year, it received a pat on the back from the Getty Grant Program, aiming to develop a campus heritage preservation plan.
The university went on to add another feather to its cap in 2015 when the Arbor Day Foundation recognized it as a Tree Campus USA. The recognition stood for the commitment graduates showed towards the environment and tree planting. Further, in 2016, due to its historic trees and landscapes, the Morton Arboretum accredited it as a Level II arboretum.
