Dating back to 1935, Norfolk State University has an engaging tale to share. The seeds of this esteemed institution were sown on September 18 of that year, when it took shape as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. The initial batch consisted of 85 vibrant minds, their courses overseen by Mr. Samuel Fischer Scott. An old pupil of Virginia Union himself, Scott, a native of Portsmouth, took up the baton as the first director. His pressing mandate was to sustain the school's solvency.
Four years following its inception in 1938, Dr. Lyman Beecher Brooks, another proud Virginia Union alumnus, took the reigns from Scott. He held the director’s position, eventually rising to serve as provost during 1963-1969, and finally becoming the first president from 1969-1975.
A pivotal transition occurred in 1942 when Norfolk broke away from VUU, transforming into Norfolk Polytechnic College. An act of the Virginia Legislature facilitated its affiliation with Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in the span of just two years. By 1950, Norfolk proudly celebrated its 15th anniversary with impressive growth noted—a faculty of fifty and a student count that surpassed the 1000 mark.
Fast forward to 1952, Norfolk's athletes adopted the robust 'Spartan' moniker and identity. Meanwhile, the City of Norfolk allocated a permanent site for the college on Corprew Avenue. Three years later, in 1955, Brown Hall swung open its doors as the first permanent structure on the new campus. Norfolk achieved another milestone the next year granting its first set of bachelor's degrees.
A fundamental shift came about in 1969 when the college parted ways with Virginia State College, thus ushering in the era of Norfolk State College. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted them accreditation within that transformative year, boasting 5,400 students. The first master's degrees in Communications and Social Work were awarded in 1975 and 1976 respectively, the same year Dr. Harrison Benjamin Wilson Jr. succeeded Dr. Brooks as president.
The Norfolk saga got even more riveting when the General Assembly of Virginia bestowed upon it, the university status in 1979. Norfolk State College then morphed into Norfolk State University. It celebrated its golden jubilee in 1985 with year-long commemorations and an enrollment of 7,200. A decade later, the enrollment escalated to 9,112.
Dr. Harrison Wilson bowed out in 1997 ushering in Marie Valentine McDemmond, followed by Alvin J. Schexnider, Carolyn Meyers, and Tony Atwater as presidents. Atwater's removal in 2013, saw Sandra DeLoatch step in as the acting president. Soon after, Eddie N. Moore Jr. took charge on an interim basis.
A bit of a hiccup materialized in December 2013 as the university was placed on probation by its regional accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, for financial and governance issues. But Norfolk rallied and the probation was lifted merely two years later. Moore Jr. officially assumed the mantle of Norfolk's 6th president in early 2016.
Fast-tracking to recent years, we find the baton passing on to Dr. Melvin Stith as interim president in early 2018 after Moore Jr.'s retirement. Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston took over as the 7th president the following year. No history of Norfolk State can ever be considered complete without mentioning philanthropist MacKenzie Scott's generous contribution of $40 million—the largest single donation in the university's history—received in 2020. From its humble beginnings, Norfolk State University has come a long way. It has become a beacon of knowledge, contributing immensely to the field of education on a global level.
