It all started over a hundred years ago, you know, in 1894. There was this chap called Dr. Charles H. Keyes who dreamt of a place. A place, not just any place, but a school where curious minds could go wild, exploring arts and sciences. Feeling jolly-good, he started North Adams Normal School, the granddaddy of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).
Down the line, in 1932, the name had a bit of a switcheroo. The varsity that was once a normal school (doesn't sound too exciting, does it?) was now known as State Teachers College of North Adams. No kidding! They offered a 4-year degree instead of the normal 2-year degree. Cool, ain't it?
Then came along the Swinging Sixties, you know, the Beatles, flower power and stuff? Well, in the midst of all that groove, in 1960 to be precise, the name got jazzed up again. Not as State Teachers College but as North Adams State College. But hold on, it wasn't only about the name swap. They started offering a broader range of courses and degrees. Now, wouldn't say that's far out, would you mate?
Fast forward to 1997, in the era of baggy jeans and grunge, North Adams State College finally became what we now know as Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. A name change that still holds. Hallelujah!
In 2002, came something shiny and new; a Science center! In 2014, the college decided that a snazzy academic facility, the Feigenbaum Center for Science & Innovation was just the thing they needed. And boy, let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold, filled to the brim with all the latest lab equipment!
MCLA's evolution wasn't just about its name, my friend. We're talking a complete revamp in academics too. The tired-out traditional disciplines made way for the bouncing baby of liberal arts. They started offering newfangled majors like Business Management and Public Relations that sent students a-buzz with excitement.
Nowadays, MCLA's profile is heaving with over 50 academic programs. Its crown jewel is the Center for Science & Innovation. And its students, Oh my goodness, they're from all over the globe, with nearly a quarter of them representing 30 different countries! That's a proper melting pot of cultures, isn't it?
Even though MCLA had humble beginnings as a normal school, its history is sprinkled with bold innovations and confirms that it's not your average Joe of the academic world. Its story is a living testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation, much like our favourite desi chai that constantly evolves whilst retaining its rich, flavourful core.
In the end, MCLA's kind of like your favourite Bollywood blockbuster. Full of twists, turns and a few makeovers. But, with an unfaltering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of its students. Now, that's what you call, a college with some solid masala! Now, ain't that worth popping the corn, sitting back, and watching the story unfold?
