The opportunity came knocking when Richard Cushing, the Archbishop of Boston, requested assistance from the Order of Saint Augustine. They had a mission to develop a liberal arts college, a place where minds could be nurtured and values instilled. Merrimack College, only the second college in the United States affiliated with the Augustinian order, was thus born.
In the heartland of Massachusetts, set in the city of Lawrence, was the visionary behind this great initiative – Reverend Vincent McQuade. An Augustinian priest, Villanova faculty member, and a close friend of Archbishop Cushing, he had a dream about creating a special space for education. McQuade was about to take charge of the college's formation, wearing several hats in the process—land acquisition, zoning, securing a state charter, curriculum development, even overseeing the construction of the campus.
