The idea for Walsh University was born in 1951, not in Canton, Ohio, but in the quaint town of Alfred, Maine. At that time, it existed under the name of LaMennais College, an initiative by the Brothers of Christian Instruction. Their goal? They wanted to pave the way for young men to not only become Brothers but also to become educators themselves.
Fast forward to 1957 – an intriguing conversation took place between Brother Francoeur of La Mennais College and Monsignor William Hughes of Youngstown, Ohio. The topic on table: The Brothers' ambition of shifting the college from Alfred, Maine. So, guess who extended an open invitation? Bishop Emmett Michael Walsh, widely recognized in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, which is how the institute got its name. Successful in swaying the Brothers, Walsh guided them to Canton, Ohio, as the perfect new home for their college.
Bishop Walsh’s contribution to the vision didn't end with mere words. He put his money where his mouth was, donating a whopping $304,000 to the project that would soon be rechristened Walsh College. And thus, in 1959, the modest area of fifty acres farm land in Canton transformed into a vibrant academic hub nurturing thinkers and educators. You may wonder where this area was. Why not take a stroll down Farrell Hall and LaMennais Hall where you would find international priest-students cosily residing, just as they did ever since the start?
Through the years, Brotherhood took on a concrete form, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Founding Brothers. Names that stand out from the History logbooks are of- Dacian J. Barrette, Thomas S. Farrell, Henry J. Vannasse, Edmond Drouin, Paul E. Masse, Robert A. Francoeur, and Alexis Guilbeault. You could feel their continued presence on the campus - they served as faculty during the primary stages of the college, and their guiding influence played an important role in the growth and evolution of facilities and programmes. And several of them being presidents should hardly come as a surprise.
The humble beginnings of the University never restricted its vision, thus a monumental shift occurred in 2013. Turning a new leaf, Walsh University became a part of Division II of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Prior to this, it carried the banner of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a member of the American Mideast Conference. Its football team too held a prestigious position in the Mid-States Football Association.
Jump to 2019, upon the calendar’s turn on July 1, the University had a new President, Timothy J. Collins to lead further chapters of its illustrious journey. The seventh president in the history of the University, Collins was ready to continue the legacy that started with brilliant minds wanting to shape the future of young men.
