History Carleton College

Imagine stepping back in time to 1866, where Minnesota's Congregational Churches had a unanimous vision—the creation of a prominent educational establishment in the heart of Northfield. Take a guess who made this dream a reality? Two local entrepreneurs by the names of Charles Augustus Wheaton and Charles Moorehouse Goodsell, each splurging on 10 acres of land for the first campus. Fast forward to the autumn of 1867, which notably marked the enrollment of the initial batch of learners at the preparatory level for what was then known as Northfield College.

Cut to the year 1870, when the college's very first president, James Strong, enthusiastically embarked on his journey to the East Coast armed with the mission of procuring funds. However, life had a theatrical twist in store for him. An unfortunate incident saw his carriage colliding with a train, leaving Strong severely wounded. Like a silver lining in this grim tale, William Carleton was left thoroughly impressed by Strong's courage in what seemed like a fight with fate. This stand-out encounter led to Carleton generously donating $50,000 to the budding institution in 1871. In gratitude, the Board of Trustees christened the school Carleton College.

Four years down the line, in 1874, Carleton College celebrated a significant milestone—the graduation of its first college class, James J. Dow and Myra A. Brown. This academic feat ultimately culminated in a heartwarming personal moment for the duo, as they tied the knot later that same year.

1876 arrived carrying the distinct whiff of gunpowder and lawlessness. On September 7, the infamous James-Younger Gang, led by the notorious outlaw Jesse James, attempted to rob the First National Bank of Northfield. The figure at the center of this thrilling saga was none other than our institution's Treasurer, Joseph Lee Heywood, who bravely refused to unlock the safe despite losing his life. Carleton College forever remembers him, with a library fund honoring his name.

In the face of evolving religious sentiments, in 1903, Carleton experienced a sea-change under the presidency of William Sallmon, a Yale Divinity School graduate. Sallmon received significant resistance from conservative faculty and alumni and had to leave by 1908. Following him, Donald J. Cowling, another graduate of Yale Divinity School, took over, and under his auspices in 1916, Carleton entered an official partnership with the Minnesota Baptist Convention. This union, however, ended in 1928 due to objections over Carleton's liberal leanings, including support for evolution. Deciding to remain non-denominational for several years, in 1964, Carleton decided to do away with the mandatory weekly religious or spiritual gathering.

1937 saw the genesis of the first student-created pub in the country, The Cave. Nestled in the basement of Evans Hall, the place continues to be a hot-spot for live music and other social gatherings. Carleton further expanded its boundaries and in 1942, bought land in Stanton to facilitate flight training. This space catered during World War II, when several batches of male students underwent basic aviation training. Although now a commercial field, the memories of our past endeavors continue to soar at the Stanton Airfield.

Looking back at the cultural scenario in 1948—one must remember the premiere of Bertolt Brecht's 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' in English—which was hosted by Carleton's Little Nourse Theater. Carleton's cultural and spiritual scene underwent a change in 1963 when the student-founded Reformed Druids of North America came into existence. Initially aimed at avoiding mandatory weekly chapel service, the group later turned towards spiritual realization. Their legacy is retained in the names of numerous spots on the campus like the Stone Circle and the Hill of the Three Oaks.

Let's fast forward to a date etched in our memories, June 10, 2000, when we welcomed President Bill Clinton. Giving his last commencement address at our college, this marked the first presidential visit to our auspicious campus. Commemorating the story of a humble dream that blossomed into an institution of global repute, Carleton College continues to shape the lives of countless students with its rich history and tradition.
