Decades ago, around the late 19th century, a wave of Norwegian immigrants, essentially Lutheran Christians, flooded into Rice County, Minnesota. They held a dream of a non-secular post-secondary institution, deeply rooted in Lutheran values, offering quality education in both English and Norwegian. This is the backdrop in which St. Olaf College was conceived.
The Reverend Bernt Julius Muus was the catalyst for the founding of this unique institution. Reaching out and gathering support from two other pastors, Revs. N.A. Quammen and H. Thorson, they raised an impressive $10,000 pledge, enough to actualize their vision. This founding was pursued despite the controversies surrounding Reverend Muus, who had faced a serious scandal in the past.
On January 8, 1875, St. Olaf School, the forefather of today's college, proudly opened its doors to students under the masterful leadership of Thorbjorn N. Mohn, a Luther College graduate. Years later, the school celebrated the laying of its foundation stone by none other than Herman Amberg Preus, president of the Norwegian Synod.
The institution embraced evolution as it introduced the Manitou Messenger in 1887. Originally a campus magazine, it transformed into the current student newspaper. This year also sang praises for Agnes Mellby, the first female graduate of the college, signifying the college's commitment to gender equality.
St. Olaf School, later renamed St. Olaf College in 1889, faced a string of financial challenges. Faced with a steep fall in enrolment, it had to take drastic measures. A mission to collect funds was launched by the assigned Professor H.T. Ytterboe while President Mohn expertly handled the finances. Their combined efforts bore fruit and by 1897, the crushing debt was reduced to a meagre $4,000.
Despite being a sanctuary of learning, St. Olaf was not untouched by illness. A scarlet fever epidemic shook the campus in 1903. With no hospital nearby, the boys’ dormitory served as an emergency medical facility. A similar situation arose in 1918 with the outbreak of the Spanish flu and the campus had to again double as a hospital.
Located far away from the frenzied activities of World War II, St. Olaf was initially only involved in Red Cross drives and a “Bundles for Britain” project. However, by the fall of 1942, over 400 of their brave hearts were serving overseas. In a move to support the nation, dormitories on campus were converted for housing naval recruits.
Fast forward to the current times, St. Olaf stands tall, with a tally of twelve presidents since its inception. Each part of its history helps to mould St. Olaf into the prestigious institution that it is today. As you embark on your journey here, remember you are not just part of a college, but a legacy steeped in rich history, resilience and the undying aim of promoting academic excellence.
