History Holy Cross College

Born from the unyielding spirit of Benedict Joseph Fenwick, the second Bishop of Boston, College of the Holy Cross took its roots as the first Catholic college in New England amidst adversity. Facing opposition from Boston's Protestant civic leaders, Fenwick tenaciously maintained the vision of a Catholic college within his diocese, particularly post-1830, as immigrant influx increased the demand for Jesuit education. Did you know who he had on his side the entire journey? The Society of Jesus, who sent Father Thomas F. Mulledy to support Fenwick's pursuit after meticulously reviewing and reporting favorably on Fenwick's proposal in August 1843.

The chilly relations with Boston's civic leaders stretched further, prompting Fenwick, in 1843, to establish the Holy Cross College in central Massachusetts, a strategic 45 miles (72 km) west of the city. Immunity from interference was high on his list. Letters penned excitedly by the Bishop reveal his joy over the location of the college.

What's intriguing is that, the college was founded where once stood a Roman Catholic boarding school run by James Fitton alongside his collaborator, Joseph Brigden. Bishop Fenwick acquired the plot on February 2, 1843, to establish the Roman Catholic institution he had always envisioned. And the name? Holy Cross, inspired by his Cathedral church back in Boston.

Unveiling its doors in October 1843, with Father Mulledy, ex-president of Georgetown University at its helm, and just six students aged 9 to19, Holy Cross began to shape young minds. In a rapid progression, within three years, it grew to accommodate 100 students, transitioning from elementary to high school-level education to a higher level institution.

The first batch entered the world in 1849, led by James Augustine Healy, the biracial offspring of an Irish plantation owner in Georgia and his common-law wife, a former slave. Healy's journey transcends being a graduate to becoming the first African-American bishop in the United States.

Yet, the journey wasn't smooth. The school's main building, Fenwick Hall, was annihilated by a disastrous fire in 1852. But hope flickered even amidst the ashes. Funds were gathered to re-establish the college, defeating the flames of adversity and reopening in 1853.

Meanwhile, petitions to obtain a state charter were repeatedly denied until 1865, courtesy of anti-Catholic sentiments within the state legislature, exacerbated by increased Irish immigration during the famine years. And so, Holy Cross diplomas bore the signature of Georgetown University's president until then. On March 24, 1865, persistence paid off—Governor John Albion Andrew finally awarded the charter.

During World War II, Holy Cross made notable contributions by participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, manifesting an avenue for students aiming for a Navy commission. Isn't it extraordinary how education and patriotism collided?

The dawn of new millennia continued to bring progress. In 1998, Holy Cross kicked off an ambitious eight-year campaign, "Lift High the Cross," surpassing its target of $175 million to raise $216.3 million by 2006. The campaign's success pumped new life into the college with 12 new faculty positions and over 75 endowed scholarships.

But wait, there's more! On July 1, 2000, Michael C. McFarland took the reins, followed by Philip L. Boroughs in 2011. The year 2021 marked a milestone, with Vincent D. Rougeau, Dean of the Boston College Law School stepping in as the first black president.

Today, Holy Cross stands tall carved by each event in its rich history. For instance, in 2018, they mulled over changing the college's "Crusader" mascot, eventually deciding to reinterpret its historic association with the Crusades. Furthermore, in 2019, they did away with their need-blind admissions policy. Over an exciting and ever-evolving history, Holy Cross College continues to educate and inspire students across the world.
