History University of Notre Dame

Picture this - the year was 1842, when the bishop of Vincennes, Célestin Guynemer de la Hailandère, offered land to Edward Sorin. Mr. Sorin, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, was bestowed with a mission - to establish a college in a span of two years. The 524 acres of land on which the university now stands was originally bought by the first priest ordained in the United States, Stephen Badin, in 1830. Edward Sorin along with eight Holy Cross brothers from France and Ireland arrived to this land on November 26, 1842, with a vision to start a school.

They started from an old log chapel that previously belonged to Badin. After admitting their first two students, Sorin and his team swiftly moved forward, erecting more buildings - the Old College, the first church, and the main building. Initially, Notre Dame was a primary and secondary school. Its evolution into a college and later a university was marked by it receiving an official charter from the Indiana General Assembly in 1844 under its full name, the University of Notre Dame du Lac.

A significant event in their early history was the awarding of the first degrees in 1849. Led by Sorin, the university introduced new academic programs and began building more infrastructure to accommodate growing student and faculty numbers. Auguste Lemonnier established a library in the Main Building, which by 1879, boasted a collection of 10,000 volumes.

A turning point arrived in April 1879 when a fire ravaged the Main Building and the library collection. This disaster led to the immediate closure of the school and students were sent home. But Sorin, a driven man, along with President Corby, quickly drew up plans to rebuild the infrastructure. Indeed, by dint of hard work, by the fall semester of 1879, the third and current Main Building was ready, housing the rebuilt library collection.

Presidency was handed over to Thomas E. Walsh in 1881. He was focused on upping the scholastic reputation and standards of Notre Dame. During his tenure, a significant number of lay intellectuals were invited to the campus. Furthermore, he saw to the start of the university's football program, awarding of the first Laetare Medal, reorganization of the Law School, and expansion of the university into a research institution.

The university's growth story didn't end there. In fact, under the supervision of John W. Cavanaugh, Notre Dame refined its educational standards. This included focusing on the school's academic reputation, increasing the number of degree holders, attracting eminent scholars, and introducing courses in chemical engineering. In 1917, Notre Dame marked another milestone by awarding the first degree to a woman.

Edward Malloy, took up the presidency next, ushering in a rapid growth phase. The faculty saw a considerable expansion, with student enrollment and university income growing significantly. The number of minority students doubled while the endowment grew from $350 million to over $3 billion. The sense of achievement was furthered when the university raised $2.014 billion in its 2014 capital campaign, exceeding its initial goal of $767 million.

In 2005, John I. Jenkins succeeded Malloy. He set his vision towards making the university an ethically guided leader in research. Numerous construction projects sprouted up under his tenure and he increased the student body. Given this rich history amplified by relentless efforts to improve, the University of Notre Dame today stands proud, committed to upholding its legacy of academic excellence and constant progress.
