History Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences

Welcome to a journey through the captivating history of Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences, an institution that has been an intellectual beacon since 1833. Oberlin's origins can be traced back to a time when it was merely an idea fueled by Yankee dreams and divine inspirations. The early believers saw Oberlin as their mission - an opportunity to create a pious community devoted to Christian principles and education.

In 1833, Oberlin Collegiate Institute sprang into existence, thanks to the collective efforts of John Jay Shipherd, a Presbyterian minister, and Philo Stewart, a missionary. Shipherd and Stewart created this institution on a sizeable 500-acre plot gifted by Titus Street, the founder of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Samuel Hughes from Connecticut. The naming of the institute was a tribute to Jean-Frédéric Oberlin, an influential Alsatian minister.

Oberlin was much more than just an institution; it was perceived as an embodiment of Utopian perfectionist enthusiasm that was sweeping through the country in the 1830s. However, it was not without its struggles, having ceased operations for a brief stint in 1839-40 due to financial constraints. Despite these challenges, Oberlin remained resilient and continued to be a cornerstone of academic excellence.

Notable in its history is Oberlin's profound commitment to abolitionism. By 1844, Oberlin had graduated its first black student, George Boyer Vashon, marking a significant milestone in the college’s contribution to the education of African-American students. Oberlin's progressive stance didn't stop at breaking racial barriers; it was the pioneer in breaking gender barriers as well. The institution started admitting women to its two-year "women's program" in 1837, making it the oldest coeducational college in the United States.

As an active participant in the abolitionist movement, Oberlin College was a major stopover in the Underground Railroad, assisting countless fugitive slaves in their quest for freedom. Its vibrant abolitionist avocation earned it a moniker, "the town that started the Civil War". Oberlin faculty and students have repeatedly showcased their commitment to social justice, fearlessly participating in activities that promote equality and humanitarianism.

Oberlin College has experienced a series of transformations under the leadership of various presidents each adding their unique flavors to its evolution. From tripling minority enrollment under the leadership of the 33-year-old Robert W. Fuller to persevering through tumultuous times under Robert K. Carr - the history of Oberlin is peppered with noteworthy leadership anecdotes.

In more recent times, Oberlin received national attention in a dispute with Gibson's Bakery and Market, a local business. The complex incident in 2016 spun into a court case that ended in 2022 with Oberlin paying the hefty sum of $36.59 million in damages. These episodes, though complex, serve as pieces of the intricate patchwork quilt that makes up the rich history of Oberlin College, an institution committed to intellectual excellence, social justice, and forward-thinking education.
