History The University of Texas of the Permian Basin

Let's jump back to the start, in 1973. Picture this — The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) is born as a beacon of higher education. However, here's the catch! It only opened its doors to junior, senior, and graduate level students. Can you predict who were the driving forces behind its establishment? It was oil tycoon, Bill Noël and his wife, Ellen Witwer Noël. Quite a power couple, don't you think? Their legacy of philanthropy for UTPB is cherished even till date.

Now, every institution has rivalries and UTPB was no exception. Facing-off right at its inception was Odessa College (OC). Here comes a fun fact for you. The OC students were way too cheeky! They dared the UTPB students saying they were too old to have a streaker amongst them. Can you believe a UTPB student actually took up this dare and made a cheeky dash across the campus with his head as the only cover? Talk about school spirit!

Flash forward to 1991, UTPB made a big move. It swung open its gates for freshmen and sophomore applicants too. Talk about expanding horizons! Now here comes another impressive milestone. The year 2000 saw the unveiling of the J. Conrad Dunagen Library and Lecture Center, armed with a multimedia lab and classroom. Impressive!

By 2006, UTPB was caught in high-stakes negotiations with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. What was the setting? Picture this – a High-Temperature Teaching and Test Reactor, touted to be the first university-based research reactor in the US in about a decade, and one of the very few of its kind globally. Sound like science fiction? Well, come 2016, the city of Odessa granted site permission, taking this aspiration one step closer to reality!

On April 17, 2008, UTPB laid the foundation for a new Science and Technology Complex. The facility promised to be comprehensive, fostering the growth of chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, and information technology programs. And boy, did it live up to that promise! The sprawling 70,000-square-foot building, completed in time for the Fall 2011 semester, boasted of 41 labs, 56 offices, six classrooms, and three sunken lecture halls. Here's an inside scoop — due to a hiccup during construction, extra reinforcement was needed for the building supports. But hey, what's progress without minor hiccups, right?

But the university's ambitious growth didn't stop there. Off Hwy 191 and FM 1788 at the Midland campus, construction began in 2009 on a state-of-the-art structure now known as the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center. And you won't believe who graced its grand inauguration in 2011 — none other than the iconic Rod Stewart!

UTPB's expansion plan continued to capture milestones. In 2018, it anticipated a new Kinesiology building at a whopping budget of around 37 million dollars. And as if that wasn’t enough, the following year witnessed the strengthening of its academic infrastructure with the advent of a 55 million dollar Engineering edifice. I bet that sounds intriguing!

Thus, you see, the ever evolving journey of UTPB stands testament to its commitment towards nurturing a vibrant and world-class academic environment. As you embark on your educational voyage, remember the stirring tale of this pioneering institution. Who knows, you could be the next trailblazer shaping the future narrative of UTPB!
