Around the mid-sixties, specifically 1964, did you know the authorities in charge of Washington State's universities sounded an alarm? They declared an urgent need for an additional institution for higher learning. They felt it was necessary not just to level the academic field, but also to better distribute educational resources across the state. Subsequently, this led the Washington legislature in 1965 to form a specialized council; their mission was to examine potential needs and suitable locations for this novel college.
Following their studies, the council along with a company known as Nelson Associates, based out of New York made a solid recommendation. Thus, in 1965-66, they advocated, in no uncertain terms, that a new college should come to life "at the earliest possible time". The chosen location? It was a suburb in Thurston County, approximately 16 km from Olympia.
The chosen location couldn't be just anywhere. The mandate - HB 596 (Chapter 47, Laws of 1967) – had specific requirements. Evergreen’s future campus, as per the legislation, needed to occupy not less than 240 ha, thus making it the largest one in the state at the time. Furthermore, it was a significant milestone, the first public four-year college to be established in Washington during the 20th century.
Their search for a fitting name resulted in "The Evergreen State College". Out of 31 alternatives, this was finalised on January 24, 1968. Just a few months later on November 1, 1968, the leader of the soon-to-be college, Charles J. McCann, was appointed, and quickly filled the honourable role of the first presidency. The first batch of classes kicked off on October 4, 1971, with an impressive 1,128 students. McCann’s presidency lasted till June 6, 1977; he then joined the faculty, making way for ex-governor Daniel J. Evans. The largest building and the entrance plaza of the campus are named in honor of these two men, marking their contributions.
A significant landmark was achieved in the 1992-93 school year - a graduating class of more than 1,000 for the first time. A keynote address delivered by Mumia Abu-Jamal, a controversial figure invited by the class of 1999, attracted some protests. In 2004, a new 16,000 m2 building called Seminar II was added, along with extensive renovation of the library.
Fast forward to 2015, George Sumner Bridges assumed the role of sixth president of Evergreen State. He'd previously been with Whitman College, a prestigious institution located in Washington. While at Evergreen, Bridge's primary focus was on promoting social equality across the campus. This included radical transformations concerning faculty hiring and evaluation; however, it also brought its fair share of controversy.
For example, in 2017, a segment of students from ethnic minorities expressed feeling unwelcome on campus. This brought about significant changes in the traditional "Day of Absence", an annual event since the 1970s meant to highlight the contributions of minorities. These changes, however, sparked national attention and ignited heated dialogues about race and speech.
Lastly, in May 2017, the placid campus was disrupted by student protesters' demands for changes. This resulted in tension and threats that led to the campus's closure and an emergency evacuation. This tumultuous phase left a significant impact; enrollment fell 41%, sparking a reevaluation of the college's policies.
Time is a great healer, they say, and Evergreen State is an example of that. The college has bounced back today, hosting nearly 2000 students from across the globe. Who knows, you may soon find yourselves walking its remarkable campus.
