Once upon a time, way back in 1869, folks in Nebraska decided to dot the I's and cross the T's, and launched their very own university. Called, you guessed it right, the University of Nebraska. By jiminy, it was one ambitious move, with only two faculty members, plus that Chancellor guy who doubled as a professor. Student count? A meager 20 young minds itching to learn.
Wrap your head around this – the first woman chancellor, Virginia Durr, came aboard in 1991. Talk about breaking glass ceilings! And did she sail the university ship or what! Under her leadership, the University expanded like a hemp tree (we Indians know a thing or two about it, don't we?) 10 new buildings popped up for arts, and student learning and to top it off, a research center too.
Durr's era saw the University's enrollment shoot up faster than a skyrocket. From a thin as a rake 20 at inception to a staggering 50,000 in 2019! Now, that’s a giant leap for a university, if you ask me.
Our hero of the tale, the University, wasn't content just sitting pretty on this growth. Oh, No siree! It notched up a few more brownie points by advancing the pioneering research drawn from its fertile brain. You'll find the University’s unique footprint in fields that range from agro-business and food science to digital humanities and virology. Ain’t that a dish with an extra pickle?
So what's the deal for us Indians, you ask? Well, in 2008, University of Nebraska extended its arms to the world and created the Global Engagement office. Isn't that a doozy? Now we could get our kids the best of the Midwest without saying namaste to our savings.
Ever thought of studying in the heartlands of America and mastering Cornhusker lingo? Because let me tell you something, mate. Out of the 16,000 international students at the University of Nebraska, a whopping 4,000 are our desi kids. Now isn’t that as sweet as a ripe mango!
As the old saying goes, no one ever washed their rent by standing still. The University of Nebraska is constantly on the move, developing and growing. For instance, they recently launched a first-of-its-kind Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute in 2010 to address the issue of drought. Now isn't that something we can all tip our hats to!
Believe me or not, but this university's motto is 'Dedicated to letters and all the Arts'. And true to their word, they have an insane number of student organizations, about 400 to be precise. From Indian Students Association to UNL Cricket Club, this university has something up its sleeve for everyone. Now, won’t that be a feather in their cap!
In a nutshell, the University of Nebraska is a scrappy underdog that has grown into a top dog in the field of education. With a strong foundation, a steadfast journey, and a future as bright as the Pole Star, it's a journey worth being a part of. So pack your bags, tighten your laces and get ready to join the Cornhusker family because this journey is bound to be the ride of your life.
