Founded by an inspiring minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church, Alonzo Webster, this historic institution opened its welcoming arms to all, irrespective of race or gender. This Vermont missionary had a vision and a mission that was larger than life - to educate freed slaves so they could confidently take their rightful places as resolute American citizens.
Alonzo was initially teaching at the Baker Bible Institute in Charleston, another establishment that the Methodist Episcopal Church specifically established for the education of African American ministers at the South Carolina Mission Conference in 1866. A year after founding Claflin, Webster merged it with the institute, bringing together two powerhouses of education.
Going back to the beginning, the college got its name from two eminent figures - Massachusetts Governor William Claflin, and his father, the philanthropist Lee Claflin. The Claflins played a crucial role in establishing the 43-acre campus, providing significant funds that made the construction possible.
Despite wearing multiple hats, Alonzo Webster took charge as Claflin's first president while juggling other distinguished roles including being a member of the college's board of trustees. Since Webster's awe-inspiring era, seven other remarkable leaders have continued his legacy, each putting their unique stamp on the institution.
Things took an interesting turn on March 12, 1872 when the South Carolina State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute became a part of Claflin University by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly. As the university progressed, it pioneered new fronts in education. It became the first Black college to introduce architectural drawing courses under its curriculum.
