Starting its journey in 1872 under the moniker of South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute, South Carolina State University (known as SC State) originated within Claflin College. It was a test of visionary ideas, given birth as part of the Land Grant Act of 1862. But, even the most visionary ideas take a different shape with time. In 1896, the South Carolina General Assembly sprung a surprise by passing an act of separation, thus giving birth to the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina, its official name until 1954.
However, the journey was not always smooth. With the increase in the student population, academic programs gained prominence; but the Great Depression took a toll on certain programs like the university’s high school. Not all was lost; the New Deal Programs were instrumental in creating Wilkinson Hall, the university’s first separate library building that now houses Admissions and Financial Aid.
The story doesn't end here. World War II left a mark on the university as a sudden influx in student population led to a shortage of classrooms. To tackle the situation, an ROTC detachment was established by the United States Army in 1947, and all male students were required to enroll in it until its mandatory enrollment policy ended in 1968.
Things began to change in 1954, when the South Carolina General Assembly took a historic decision to rename the institute as South Carolina State College. With "separate but equal" laws existing in the state, the college saw an infusion of large sums of money directed towards the development of new academic facilities, dormitories, and landmark institutions including the 1954 Student Union and Turner Hall of 1956.
But the real storm was yet to hit. During the Civil Rights Movement, the college became a breeding ground for active participation in the quest for ending segregation. The climax of these efforts reached on February 8, 1968, when a protest against the local segregated bowling alley led to the unfortunate incident now known as the Orangeburg massacre.
The university rose from the ashes, experiencing substantial growth from the late 1960s to mid-1980s under the leadership of M. Maceo Nance. This era saw the establishment of new academic and residence buildings, along with various renovations. After Nance, his successor Albert Smith introduced the honors college, and under Smith's command, the institution was finally promoted to South Carolina State University in 1992 by the South Carolina General Assembly.
Barbara Hatton, the University's first female president, took reigns in 1993 and was instrumental in achieving many landmark development projects. With continuous development, the presence of renowned guests like President Joe Biden, and historical moments like the 2008 Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Debate series, SC State has seen many presidents, advancements, and adversities in its journey.
From starting amidst the aftermath of the Civil War to being visited by a presidential candidate, from witnessing the Civil Rights Movement’s turmoil to contributing in molding leaders, academic trends, and revolutionary ideas, the story of the South Carolina State University is enigmatic and inspiring, echoing resilience and evolution.
