Once upon a tranquil Christmas Eve, 1754 to be exact, incidents took places, far removed from the festivities. In the middle of the colonial New York, Kings College sprang to life, and well, that was Columbia College's first avatar folks! King George II, no less, scribbled his royal signature and gets the credit for setting up this first-rate institution, Christmastide or not!
Did you know King's College-erstwhile-Columbia had just eight students when it started? Less than a football team! Not an ideal start, but boy, did things take off! Dr. Samuel Johnson, our first president, graced an even lesser room, ostensibly to cut his commute time possibly. With just one book on his shelf, he got cracking. After all, tough times never last; tough people do, now, don’t they?
It wasn't always smooth sailing, mind you. The American Revolution played spoilsport, and King's College closed in 1776. Ours wasn't the independence forget-me-not, for sure. Now, who said history's a fun walk in the park? But here's a turn of tide; the college metamorphosed to Columbia College in 1784, post USA's independence. Out of the ashes, like a phoenix, Columbia reemerged, reincarnated from colonial mists.
In a classic 'move on up' moment in 1857, the college outgrew its crib in lower Manhattan and sprinted uptown to Midtown Madison Avenue. Still hearting NY, the burst of the chaotic city echoed the pulsating growth and expansion of our beloved institute. The glitter of intellectual achievements kinda said 'Hello, world'. Studying here clearly became a badge of honor.
The story leaps a few years to 1897 when Columbia College became a part of Columbia University, a parental shift of sorts. Funny, isn't it, how the once King's college was now under a 'University'? To quote a good old saying, ‘What goes around, comes around.’ And did it add more reputation? Well, you bet!
The 20th century saw Columbia expanding further; everyone seemed to be queuing up to enroll. Women hollered for equal opportunities, and Columbia, folks, opened its wise doors in 1983, to the smarter gender. Now we shout out loud about equality and diversity!
So, parents and students, as you stroll the academic corridors of this historical, royal ordained institution, tread with pride. And oh, a tip, converse in English; King George might be haunting the place for a good giggle.
From starting as King's College, morphing into Columbia College, to being a part of Columbia University, our dear old institution has surely had an epic journey. It's like the great Indian curry! A tad bit of this, a pinch of that, a dash of spice, voila! Isn't it just the perfect blend? Well, that's the Columbia story for you - old, rich in heritage, constantly changing, just like India's magical, musical chaos. But here's the catch - It's not just about studying history, it's about being part of it. So, come, be part of legacy, make history!
