History Miami University

George Washington, the first US president, planted the seed of Miami University back in an era when the United States was still new. His vision, manifested in an Act of Congress, called for an academy to be established in the untouched wilderness of the Miami Valley, North of the Ohio River. In 1803, the Ohio General Assembly was entrusted with a township in the District of Cincinnati for this noble cause. The landG? It was part of the historic Symmes Purchase, bought by Judge John Cleves Symmes with the condition that some of it will be used for an academic institution.

A group of surveyors, tasked in 1803, found the perfect spot off Four Mile Creek. Fast-forward to February 2, 1809; the state finally birthed the Miami University, setting a board of trustees to oversee its development. The township hosting the campus was thus affectionately christened “Oxford” in 1810.

Loved by locals, but not by everyone, Miami University had to face some challenges. The War of 1812 interrupted the construction, and in a twist of fate, Cincinnati even tried to snatch Miami from its grasp in 1822. Despite these obstacles, a grammar school sprang up from its roots in 1818, offering education to the children of the frontier. Spearheaded by the first president, Robert Hamilton Bishop, a devout Presbyterian minister, the university established the Bible as the centre of all teachings in 1824.

Over the next few years, the university started growing both in spirit and physical presence. In 1825, the university journeyed into modern sciences with the introduction of an "English Scientific Department". Though religiously affiliated, the university was eventually inaugurated and operated by Presbyterians. And so, after the first day of classes in 1824 with 20 students and two faculty members, the university was off to a flying start.

As the university progressed, it was also recognized for its significant contributions to literature. A group of eager Miami students made the first move in 1827 by starting a periodical, The Literary Focus. While it didn’t thrive for long, it laid the groundwork for the weekly Literary Register. In an impressive footnote of history, The Miami Student, formed in 1867, credits the beginning to the Literature Register and boasts of being the oldest college newspaper in the United States.

Decades later, Miami University saw a slump in its journey. Turmoil over old school- new school controversy led the board of trustees to dismiss President Bishop in 1840. The aftermath was a decreased student count, leading to its eventual closure in 1873. Thus, ended the era of “Old Miami.”

However, the university wasn’t about to give up. Wiping off all debts and repairing its structures, Miami University proudly reopened its gates in 1885. The rest of the 1800s saw a consistent student strength below 100, focusing on non-classical subjects like botany, physics, and geology. Additionally, with a changed religious policy, the university stepped away from mandatory Presbyterian Minister ordainment for faculty, marking a shift in its philosophies.

The next significant development came in 1902. The Ohio General Assembly stepped in with the Sesse Bill that mandated co-education in all Ohio public schools. Enrollments soared and Miami University found itself in short of accommodation. This led to an arrangement with Oxford College, which rented rooms to the university's female students. Enrollments crossed the 700-mark by 1907, clearly hinting at a bright future.

Miami University has consistently faced each challenge that came its way with courage and resilience. Be it World War II era, where the university adapted its curriculum to include “war emergency courses” or after the war, when G.I Bill brought in an unprecedented influx of veterans, Miami was ready, adapting fast, and growing healthy. Miami student population crossed 5000 by 1952 and stood close to an impressive 15,000 by 1964.

In recent years, the Miami University has undergone significant transformations – from the creation of the College of Engineering and Computing in 2003 to the establishment of the Honors College in 2021. Reacting promptly to the pandemic, it closed for a brief period in 2020 and reopened partially in the fall. Currently, as part of the revitalizing MiamiRISE plan, its focus is on research programs and academic offerings, opening a new stream of opportunities for students from across the globe for years to come.
