In the heart of captivating downtown Los Angeles, you find the cradle of future artists, designers, and photographers. The year is 1930 and the birth of ArtCenter School replaces the monotonous city sounds with the strokes of creativity. Yes, that's when it all began, but it wasn't until 1935 when the visionary Fred R. Archer extended the wings of ArtCenter's ambition with the inauguration of the photography department. He didn't stop there, though! Picture the legendary Ansel Adams adding his brilliance as a guest instructor around the late 1930s!
Maintaining its creative stance, ArtCenter didn't let even the tides of World War II subside its dreams. In collaboration with California Institute of Technology, it ran a sterling technical illustration program during and after the war. As we usher in 1947, the rise in artistic seekers led to the school expanding its horizons to a larger location, the erstwhile domain of Cumnock School for Girls nestled in the beautiful Hancock Park neighborhood.
And 1949 was a landmark year as ArtCenter started bestowing Bachelor's and Master's degrees in arts. An accomplishment made even grander by the school exterminating all doubt about its quality education with full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1955. A decade later, the institution puts on its trendy hat with a fresh name, Art Center College of Design.
The next decade saw the school making waves with the introduction of a film program in 1973. Ever expanding, in 1976 the school hopped, skipped, and jumped over to the Hillside Campus in Pasadena. Holding high its international flag, from 1986 to 1996, ArtCenter ran its European counterpart in Vevey, Switzerland.
Fast forward to 2003, a memorable year, as the UN Department of Public Information acknowledges ArtCenter as a Non-Governmental Organization. Standing tall and proud, the school spread its wings further by inaugurating the South Campus, also based in Pasadena in 2004.
The turn of the second decade of the new millennium saw a commendable show of support to the institution. Spearheaded in 2011, a fundraising campaign aiming for $100 million was pleasantly exceeded in 2019, having raised a mammoth $124 million thanks to the generosity of over 7,000 Brick-and-mortar contributors.
April 16, 2020, marked the institution's 90th anniversary. Although the pandemic postponed the celebration, it couldn’t dampen the spirit of ArtCenter. I mean, just imagine nine decades of nurturing and shaping the brightest artists, designers, and photographers from all corners of the world? That’s what you call a thriving legacy! So here's to ArtCenter College of Design - ninety years of history, told in ten.
