Envision a tale commencing in 1897, interspersed with profound sorrow, hope, and an unwavering commitment to education. It is the narrative of the establishment of Bradley Polytechnic Institute, a beacon of academia, thanks to the philanthropic efforts of a resilient woman, Lydia Moss Bradley.
Now, envision Lydia, a woman who'd experienced unbearable personal loss with the death of her spouse, Tobias, and their six offspring. Notwithstanding her personal despair, she turned her agony into action. Combating the odds and procuring a considerable stake in 1892, Lydia went on to acquire America's first timepiece crafting school, Parsons Horological School in LaPorte, Indiana. Later, she had it relocated to Peoria, an action that unveiled the path to the foundation of what we know today as the Bradley University.
Aware of the importance of a well-rounded education, Lydia stipulated in her will that the newly moved school should incorporate traditional education along with practical skills like industrial arts and home economics, post her demise. She was, however, persuaded by William Rainey Harper, then president of the University of Chicago, to follow through with her goal during her lifetime. Plunging in head-first, she received the charter for Bradley Polytechnic Institute on November 13, 1896.
Through her philanthropy, Lydia bestowed 17.5 acres of land, contributed $170,000 towards infrastructure, equipment, and a library, and promised $30,000 yearly for operational expenses. Harper assumed the dual responsibilities of president for both Chicago and Bradley institutions, showcasing their intertwined destinies.
This facility was all set to open its doors to scholars, with 150 students, and 14 faculty members beginning their academic journey on October 4, 1897, in the hall that bore the Bradley name. Despite the ongoing construction, education didn't halt. Lydia's commitment was strong enough to boost the Horological Department, which introduced an additional eight faculty members and 70 trainees. The institute was officially inaugurated four days later on October 8 and witnessed its first alumna, Cora Unland, in June 1898.
The institute was initially arranged into a four-year secondary school and two-year college, offering a variety of courses including biology, chemistry, literature, languages, history, manual arts, and mathematics. With an extraordinary surge in the number of attendees, the institute transitioned into a full-fledged, four-year collegiate program by 1920 and adopted the name Bradley University in 1946.
As the years went by, additional facilities enriched the campus. In 1930, Constance Hall, the first-ever music building, was constructed. It experienced a major revamp in 1962 to become the prime music building of Bradley's Campus.
