Established in 1958, the school we've all come to know as Eckerd College was once called Florida Presbyterian College. Can you believe it all started amidst the baby boom and the time when World War II veterans were seeking higher education? It had auspicious beginnings, a joint venture between the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and the Presbyterian Church which even received official sanction from the Florida legislature!
In 1960, the doors swung wide open at its temporary site at Bayboro Harbor. The institution, focusing on liberal arts, welcomed 154 eager freshmen. By January 1962, the number had doubled and the budding college was set to expand by introducing a junior class. By the academic year of 1966-1967, the student body had grown to a robust 810.
In 1971, a significant development marked the college's history. Jack Eckerd, a well-known entrepreneur in the drugstore industry, gifted a whopping $12.5 million to the institution. His generosity – a reflection of his deep-rooted interest in Florida's welfare – not only benefited the college but also led to the establishment of Ruth Eckerd Hall, a popular regional performing arts venue in nearby Clearwater named after his wife.
Soon after, in 1972, the college’s name was changed to Eckerd College, cementing Jack Eckerd's role in its history. He even donned the hat of interim president of the college. Even though the name “Florida Presbyterian” was dropped, the affiliation with the Presbyterian Church persevered, with the official seal of the conferred degrees displaying the text "founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College."
Move forward to the 1980s, under the leadership of college president Peter H. Armacost, things took a twist. Much of the college's endowment was spent on real estate development, including waterfront homes and a retirement center on college-owned land next to the main campus. However, this venture went belly up, with more than half of Eckerd's endowment being spent without the knowledge or consent of the Board of Trustees.
This led to a tense time of abrupt retirements and resignations, including Armacost. Despite the financial loss and subsequent controversy, the main library on campus still proudly carries Armacost's name. By February 2004, through sheer hard work and resilience, the college announced it was back on solid financial ground.
Enter Donald R. Eastman III, Armacost's successor, who faced the danger of the college losing its accreditation due to these financial setbacks. The tide turned in May 2006 when Miles Collier, chairman of the Board of Trustees, along with his wife, Parker Collier, pledged a $25 million challenge gift to the college, which was later increased to a generous $40 million.
There was more good news for the college in November 2008. Alumnus Grover Wrenn, from the Class of 1964, gifted an unprecedented $1 million - the largest donation from an alumnus yet!
Despite the upheavals and bad news, Eastman managed to steer the ship to safer shores, becoming the second-longest serving president of the college. He weathered some criticism but is credited with enhancing the college's reputation post-scandal. Eastman achieved the remarkable feat of doubling student applications, expanding student housing, and restoring the college's stature.
In July 2020, Damián J. Fernández stepped into Eastman's shoes as Eckerd's new President. The college reached new heights by the fall semester of 2021, welcoming its largest incoming class — 718 first-year and transfer students. Each marking a new chapter in Eckerd's history.
