Cast your mind back to March of 1863. It was a day unlike any other when an all-male educational institute named La Salle College came alive, thanks to the shared vision of Brother Teliow and Archbishop James Wood. Its first home? St. Michael's Parish amidst the old world charm of the Olde Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia.
A shift in location was soon in order as they moved to the premises left vacant by St. Joseph's College. The backdrop for the new campus? The lively Center City district. But, as the city thrived, space became a limitation. Which was when La Salle moved into the previous mansion of Michael Bouvier, an ancestor of the glamorous Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, strategically placed at1240 North Broad Street.
Now, imagine this urban educational institute transitioning to a suburban serenity with abundant land but still wired to the city by trolleys and the newly established Broad Street Subway. That’s where La Salle found its permanent address at the junction of 20th Street and Olney Avenue in Logan neighborhood in 1930.
But the journey wasn't all rosy. Picture the 1930s, a challenging phase when La Salle was just a step away from bankruptcy, unable to sell their North Broad Street property. College Hall, which was supposed to be the main academic building, ominously stood unfinished. There was even talk of the college shutting down.
Yet, turning tides around is a part of La Salle's DNA. It was in 1938 that John McCarthy, a prominent businessman from Philadelphia, led a 75th Anniversary Fund Drive. The funds not only provided a safety net for the college but also aided in buying a plot of land in the east of 19th Street.
World War II proved to be another endurance test. Lack of students almost led to another shutdown, and even the football team was disbanded. But, the late 1940s witnessed a new era of growth, with construction of new buildings, a library, a student union, and a science building.
The 1960s was an era of expansion. Newly constructed residence halls sprung up, while local homes like "The Mansion," on David and Logan Blain's Belfield Estate, were bought or rented. The college and the high school, which shared the same premises, separated due to space constraints.
History was rewritten in 1970 when La Salle embraced co-education. Olney Hall, the primary academic edifice, opened its doors a year later. This growth momentum was carried forward in the subsequent decades, with the acquisition of land along Chew Avenue in Germantown, the Belfield Estate, and the southern orphanage run by Sisters of St. Basil the Great.
In 1984, La Salle was officially hailed as a University. Fast forward to 2007, it added the former Germantown Hospital, now the West Campus, to its portfolio. The Shoppes at La Salle in 2008 turned the tables around for the longstanding food desert in Germantown.
A groundbreaking shift occurred in 2015 with the inauguration of the first woman president, Colleen Hanycz, a former president of Brescia University College. Under her leadership, La Salle braced for a more accessible future, with tuition fees being slashed notably by 29 percent to attract a more diverse student body, though it meant letting go of some staff and downsizing certain language departments.
This then, is the story of La Salle University, a tale of grit, growth, and learning for the ages, inviting students from across the globe to be a part of their illustrious history.
