History Grand Canyon University

In the year 1949, nestled in the heart of Prescott, Arizona, Grand Canyon College came into existence. A collective of Southern Baptists saw a need for a local faith-based institution functioning at the beginning as a nonprofit entity. This would grant local Baptists the chance to earn a bachelor's or master's degree without the necessity to migrate eastward to the Baptist colleges in Texas or Oklahoma.

Within just two short years, on October 8, 1951 to be precise, Grand Canyon College unrooted itself from Prescott and made Phoenix, Arizona its permanent home.

Fast forward a little over three decades to 1984, the trustees of the college took a decision, to transition their beloved college into a university. Aligned with the 40th anniversary celebrations in 1989, they made it official, and henceforth Grand Canyon College transformed into the revered Grand Canyon University (GCU). The responsibility of governance also witnessed a shift during this time, transitioning from the Southern Baptist Convention to the GCU Board of Trustees.

Early in the 21st century, GCU stumbles into a phase of financial and other difficulties. In January 2004, its trustees took a drastic measure, they greenlit the sale of GCU to California-based Significant Education, LLC. As a result, GCU evolved into the first for-profit Christian college in the United States. The baton of managing director wound up in the hands of Michael K. Clifford, a prominent education entrepreneur, while the former board of trustees stepped down to take up advisory roles.

2008 marked an important milestone in GCU's journey. It went public and began trading on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol "LOPE"; all thanks to the financial boost from Significant Education, which, by that time, had morphed into a corporation, rebranded as Grand Canyon Education, Inc.

Post-infusion of capital, the student body of GCU experienced a burst of growth. The university's spring semester in 2017 saw an impressive surge to 17,500 students from a mere 1,000 in 2008. Around the same time period, a 2015 economic study divulged that during its expansion phase, the university infused an impressive $1 billion into the state's economy each year. This also went hand in hand with the rise in housing values by 30% and a 30% decrease in crime rates in the vicinity of the university, as disclosed by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey in February 2017.

But all was not smooth sailing. 2008 was tinged with controversy as GCU got embroiled in a lawsuit with the United States federal government. It was accused of incentivizing enrollment counselors based on the number of students they enrolled, while simultaneously accepting federal financial aid; a clear violation. In the aftermath of this lawsuit, GCU was forced to pay a hefty $5.2 million to a former employee and the federal government. Adding salt to the wounds in 2014, the total student loan debt of Grand Canyon students soared to an astonishing figure of $5.9 billion.

In the sporting arena, a little spice got stirred into the pot. Due to GCU's for-profit status, among other reasons, the Arizona State University categorically refused to compete against GCU in any sport. The distance between them a mere 16 miles! However, they resolved their differences, and the fall of 2020 witnessed the commencement of sporting events between the two universities.

2014 also saw the exploration of a return to non-profit status by GCU. However, their initial petition to the HLC (Higher Learning Commission) got rejected in 2016. But, persistence paid off and in 2018, HLC ushered GCU back into non-profit status, despite some U.S. Department of Education reservations.

Their challenges didn't end there. The big switch in profit status allegedly had another motive. A significant $9.2 million property tax bill was incremental in making GCU venture back to non-profit status. With critics pointing toward the blurred lines separating GCU from Grand Canyon Education, Inc., the hearts of the stakeholders at GCU were put to the test again.

In 2021, a lawsuit by GCU against the US Department of Education got dismissed in court. GCU alleged they didn't receive all coronavirus relief funds due to their non-profit status, leading to a second lawsuit against the Department of Education for rejecting their non-profit status, not once but twice. This suit also faced dismissal in the year 2022.

The tides turned defiantly against GCU again in 2023 when a press release accused the Department of Education, Federal Trade Commission, and Department of Veterans Affairs of attempting to sabotage their efforts to obtain non-profit status.

Furthermore, in 2023, the Department of Education fined GCU $37.7M for deceit regarding the cost of their doctoral degrees. Also, the Federal
