It all began when the Sisters of Mercy arrived on the wintry day of December 21, 1843 in Pittsburgh. They had come a long way from their homeland, County Carlow in Ireland. The Oakland stretch of Pittsburgh beckoned them as they bought a 13-acre expanse within the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This became the venue for a novel motherhouse and Our Lady of Mercy Academy. History whispers about Fort Zug, a Civil War redoubt that stood where the campus now sprawls.
As 1929 dawned, the Sisters of Mercy conceived and founded the Mount Mercy College. Their dedication bore fruit in 1933 when the first Commencement ceremony was held. That was also the year when the college's seal and motto were cast. This was just a beginning.
Aquinas Hall sprung up three years later as a home for the library and administrative offices. By 1941, the brand-new Trinity Hall became the science hub. After the Second World War in 1945, under the G.I. Bill, men first walked the corridors of the college. Among these memorable men was the late Peter F. Flaherty, who would later govern the city of Pittsburgh and serve as Allegheny County Commissioner.
Fast forward to 1948, Antonian Hall was inaugurated with office, classroom, and theater space. Dormitories came into the picture in 1961, ending the practice of students residing in houses or halls around the campus. The ethos of Mount Mercy College had evolved so much that its name was morphed into Carlow College in 1969. The turn of the decade saw Curran Hall overhaul to facilitate the nursing school.
Crafting mission statements was a trend in the 1970s and Carlow was no exception. In 1975, the college joined in and drafted its own. What set Carlow apart happened in 1978 when it ventured into enrolling working adults in specially designed accelerated classes, a feat rarely seen in the realm of higher education.
The turn of a new century marked new milestones for this educational pioneer. 2004 witnessed the transformation of Carlow College into Carlow University. In 2005, Dr. Mary Hines took charge as the first lay president. This unique blend of tradition and progress caught the eye of the U.S. President's Community Service Honor Roll that selected Carlow University in 2011.
Fall of 1983 marked the opening of coed housing for men – starting with just one lucky student. Gender inclusiveness extended to sports by Fall 2012 with cross country, the first male sport, making its debut. On March 17, 2014, St. Patrick's Day, Carlow proudly announced its men’s basketball team for the 2014–2015 season.
In September 2015, men's soccer and men's and women's golf teams were added to the fold. By December 2016, track and field teams for both women and men were on the roster for spring 2018. A legacy that started with the Sisters of Mercy continues to forge ahead into the future, creating a vibrant learning environment that embraces diversity, inclusivity, and progress. So, are you ready to be a part of this invigorating journey of lifelong learning at Carlow?
